ESO Art & Science Residency Applications Open

21 October 2015

In partnership with the Art & Science Network, ESO invites interested artists to submit applications to be considered for a residency at one of its Chilean observatories. Conducted by Ars Electronica and ESO, this second open call is part of a successful ongoing cooperation between the two institutions.

Artists are encouraged to submit a short video conveying the ideas and themes they would like to develop and implement during a residency at one of ESOòÀÙs Chilean observatories and the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The residency will consist of an initial period at one of ESOòÀÙs observatories and then a month with the Ars Electronica Futurelab team and a mentor at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria with whom the winner will develop and create new work inspired by the visit to ESO.

The call opened for entries on 15 October 2015 and closes on 29 November 2015 (23:59 UTC+1). An international jury made up of representatives of all European Digital Art and Science Network members and ESO will select the recipient of the residency.

Fostering interdisciplinary work and intercultural exchange, as well as gaining access to new target audiences, are among the declared goals of the Art & Science initiative. There is also a strong emphasis on the role of art as a catalyst in processes of social renewal. By creating images and narratives dealing with the potential risks and rewards inherent in technological and scientific development, artists can exert an important influence on how society comes to terms with these innovations.

Full details can be found on the Art & Science Open Call webpage.
