STS-82 after clearing the tower. After grey overcast the afternoon before, the sky had almost completely cleared for launch at 3:55am. This was about the time of first sound--a loud `crackle'.

Downrange trail

STS-82 downrange, after SRB separation. Discovery's main engines, like a bright star, leave a trail moving downwards on this several second exposure. The residual smoke from the launch drifts around the floodlit pad.

Tree's overview

A lone, twisted tree overlooks the Grand Canyon from the South Rim on the 19th February 1997. The visibility was about 100 miles and this, and most of the pictures here, used a polarizing filter to reduce the scattering within the canyon.
