Experiment CG is included in the scientific research program to be implemented by spaceflight participant Guy Laliberte onboard the ISS Russian Segment .


SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT:

  • SFP-PCG and SFP-ICG containers
    each of which is a lid-covered cylinder containing test-tubes and the cooling capsule - the so-called "ice bag".
Bundled PCG test-tubes

PCG experiment uses about 1000 PCG test-tubes, each of which is filled with an individual nonpathogenic chemical substance. PCG test-tube is a sealed Tygon tube, each end of which is sealed by means of double thermal welding. PCG test-tubes are to be bundled, marked according to the test groups and frozen immediately after being filled.

The "ice bag" cooling capsule

The PCG test-tubes are to be placed around the "ice bag" capsule. The capsule is a cylinder containing a material with phase transition (with melting point of minus 30° я).

30-ml and 1-ml test tubes

Interior "jacket to be cooled" inside SFP-ICG container houses two test tubes of 2 ml each and 52 test tubes of 1 ml each, which are filled with samples for growing inorganic crystals. Each test tube is sterilized vessel made of high-density polyethylene, with a cap screwed on.

USED FLIGHT HARDWARE:

  • Panasonic DMC-ZS3 camera
    for accompanying photography.
 

PURPOSE:

  • Comparing parameters of protein crystals obtained in zero-gravity with crystals obtained on Earth.
  • Generate new protein structures of scientific interest, as well as of special importance for pharmaceutical applications.
  • Obtaining inorganic crystals of diffirent colours and sizes, comparing their parameters with those obtained under earth conditions.

OBJECTIVE:

  • Growing protein crystals on ISS RS.
  • Growing inorganic crystals on ISS RS.

EXPERIMENT RESULTS:

Crystals grown under microgravity conditions, as well as accompanying photographic information downlinked timely to the ground from the ISS RS.
