"ANDROMEDA" PROGRAM

russian

On April 18, 2001, an Agreement was signed between Russian Aviation and Space Agency, French national center for space research (CNES) and S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to launch a French cosmonaut Claudie Haignere (Andre-Deshaus), a member of European astronauts corps to the Russian Segment (RS) of ISS as a flight engineer within the second visiting crew (October - November, 2001,
ISS-3).

During her stay on-board ISS RS, Claudie Haignere will carry out the French science and engineering research program "Andromeda", which is a constituent part of the "Program for implementation of scientific and application research planned for the third manned expedition ISS-3". CNES is a customer for preparing and carrying out the program of scientific and engineering experiments during the French cosmonaut mission to ISS RS.

In the course of "Andromeda" program, there are plans to implement 33 sessions under 10 experiments, which include:

  • geophysical research
-12 sessions;
  • medical and biological research
-14 sessions;
  • biotechnology research
-2 sessions;
  • engineering research
-5 sessions.

To implement the program, 26 equipment items will be used, out of these, 21 items were supplied by the French side and 5 items were supplied by the Russian side.

As a result of the program implementation, it is expected that the experimenters will be provided with 58 items of materials containing the experiments results with a total mass of 13.4 kg.

The following resources are needed to perform the "Andromeda" program:

LOGISTICS

Delivery to ISS RS on-board:

  • Progress M-45 logistics vehicle
  • Progress M-CO1 logistics vehicle/module
  • Soyuz TM-33 transportation vehicle

CREW TIME
Flight engineer of Visiting Crew 2 (French cosmonaut)
23 h 45 min
Commander of Visiting Crew 2
7 h 30 min
Flight engineer of ISS-3
6 h 15 min

Most of the research program is performed by the flight engineer - French cosmonaut of Visiting Crew 2. Medical experiments ("Cardioscience", "Cogni") are performed by two members of Visiting Crew 2 (commander and flight engineer - French cosmonaut), while geophysical experiments ("Immedias", "LSO") are performed by flight engineer of ISS-3 and flight engineer - French cosmonaut.

"ANDROMEDA" EXPERIMENTS BY AREAS OF RESEARCH

"Andromeda" program envisages implementation of 10 experiments under the following areas of research:

Geophysics research
"Immedias" Obtaining digital and photographic film images of cloud formations, areas of natural and man-made atmospheric pollution and areas with bad environmental situation.
"LSO" A study of optical radiation emissions in the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere related to thunderstorm activity and seismological processes.

Medical and biological research
"Cardioscience" Research of human cardiovascular system under zero gravity.
"Cogni" Research of human neurosensory system under zero gravity.
"EAC" The use of new computer technologies to improve the psychological condition of a cosmonaut under a long duration space mission.
"Aquarius" A study of effects of exposure to microgravity on the growth and development of biological objects.

Biotechnology research
"GCF" Protein crystallization.

Engineering research
SPICA-S Research into effects of space environment on the radiation resistance of electronic components.
"F/PKE" Research into plasma-dust cristals and liquids in microgravity. The experiment is conducted as the French part of the experimental research program "Plasma crystal - 3".
"Mirsupio" Development of support equipment to improve the quality of cosmonaut's stay in space on a long-duration mission.
