As the expeditions to the manned complexes are increasingly
scheduled for a longer period, the task to monitor permanently
cosmonauts' habitable environment, primarily water, becomes
urgent. On-line monitoring conducted by facilities being
simple in operation is required. The test systems based
upon biosensors, among which bioluminescent sensors are
of special interest, meet such requirements. Relatively
simple measuring instruments with electric output signal
were developed on their basis. These measuring instruments
together with the developed methods of biosensor conservation
for long periods of time allow to execute on-line monitoring
of toxicity of the solutions and water on the orbital station.
SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENT USED:
NOMINAL HARDWARE USED:
CONSUMABLE:
- Stowage of accessories and consumables Biotoks-10K.
Objects of study are samples of the water recovered
from atmospheric water condensate after the ISS SR
purification units prior to conserving agent Ag+ being
introduced, as well as water samples delivered from
the ground.

PURPOSE:
- Verification of the characteristics of environmental
monitoring of instrument Biotoks-10A intended for
an integrated assessment of toxicity of the solutions
and water with no conserving agents under microgravity
conditions by means of measuring variation in luminescence
intensity of microbial biosensor Ekolum during its
interaction with the substances contained by a sample
under test as compared with a standard measuring
instrument and by comparing the findings with similar
results produced under ground conditions.
- Development of the recommendations for nominal
use of this device (or certification of this instrument
as a nominal one) for on-line determination of the
water integrated toxicity on the ISS RS.
OBJECTIVES:
- Identifying toxicity of water samples through
measuring variation in luminescence intensity of
microbial biosensor Ekolum during its interaction
with the substances contained in a sample under
test as compared with a standard measuring instrument.
- Modifying this instrument to be used under space
flight conditions as a nominal equipment for on-line
integrated assessment of toxicity of the ISS RS
solutions and water.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
- Development testing of the procedure for on-line
integrated assessment of the ISS RS water toxicity.
- Development of nominal onboard system of water
toxicity express monitoring on the ISS RS.
