BIRTH DATA AND PLACE:
Born on April 16, 1959 in Vancouver, Washington, USA but considers Camas, Washington, to be his home town. His parents, Joseph and Donna Barratt, reside in Camas, Washington.

EDUCATION:
Graduated from Camas High School, Camas, WA, 1977.
In 1981 he received a bachelor degree in zoology, University of Washington. In 1985 he received M.D., Northwestern University where he was on a special course in Internal Medicine from 1985 to 1988. In 1988-1989 he was a Chief specialist at Veterans Hospital in Chicago. In 1989-1991 he was on a special course and certified in Aerospace Medicine, Wright State University.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to the former Michelle Lynne Sasynuik; they have five children.

EXPERIENCE:
From May 1991 to July 1992 he worked at JSC in Life Sciences Office and served on the Health Maintenance Facility Project related to the Hyperbaric and Respiratory Subsystems for Space Station Freedom.
From July 1992 to January 1994 he worked as NASA Flight Surgeon in Space Shuttle Medical Operations.
Since January 1994 he worded under the joint US/Russian space program. For 12 months he worked at the Yu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in support of the Mir-18/STS-71 mission.
From July 1995 through July 1998, he served as Medical Operations Lead for the International Space Station. He was responsible for agreement of medical requirements and standards for all ISS partners, development of the medical equipment requirements for the ISS. A frequent traveler to Russia, he worked jointly with colleagues at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and Institute of Biomedical Problems.
From July 1998 until selected as an astronaut candidate, Barratt served as lead crew surgeon for the first expedition crew to ISS.
On July 26, 2000 he was selected as a candidate for astronaut team-18, NASA. He passed a course of general space training, got qualification as a mission specialist and was assigned in the Astronaut Office Station Operations Branch.
On February 13, 2007 by NASA decision he was approved as a backup flight engineer for Expedition-18 to the ISS (ISS-18) and the Soyuz-TMA-13 spacecraft. In August 2007 be was assigned in advance to the prime crew for Expedition-19 to the International Space Station (ISS-19). According to these plans he was to be launched onboard the Soyuz TMA-14 spacecraft in March 2009. On February 12, 2008 NASA officially announced of his assignment to this crew.
