By the late 20th century mankind technological activities
became a significant factor affecting the environment. For
the last few decades, thermal, chemical, radioactive and
other types of environmental contamination have been a focus
of specialists' attention and are a valid cause for concern,
and sometimes for alarm, of the general public. Many predictions
show that in the 21st century the environmental protection
will become one of the most significant problems for the
majority of the industrialized countries. In a situation
like this, an established efficient wide-ranging network
for monitoring the environmental conditions, especially
in large cities and around environmentally hazardous facilities,
could become an important element in providing environmental
safety and a keystone of a stable development of society.
Automatic station for environmental monitoring outfitted
with equipment for monitoring atmospheric pollution with
noxious gases, radioactive substances, dust, as well as
for measuring weather parameters will become the key elements
of such a network. Prototypes for various designs of such
stations were developed, manufactured and field-tested at
S.P. Korolev RSC Energia.

The experience gained by our Corporation during
the development of automatic environmental and radiation
monitoring stations, a system for satellite communications
and broadcasting based on Yamal-type geostationary satellites,
systems for data acquisition, storage, processing, analysis,
display and transmission to users, allows us to develop
systems for radiation and environment monitoring (including
monitoring of atmospheric gas composition) , as well as
systems for monitoring and controlling remote facilities
of the power grid, of the Ministry of Russian Federation
for Atomic Power, of the oil and gas industry and pipeline
transportation, to introduce automatic stations for environmental
and radiation control into the environmental monitoring
systems in Russia (Moscow, Moscow region, Korolev, Norilsk)
and abroad.
The use of automatic stations for continuous monitoring
takes environmental monitoring to a new qualitative level.
Continuous documenting of atmospheric condition in industrial
sites, local high-risk areas (firing ranges, storehouses
for radioactive or chemical substances, etc.) allows to
objectively evaluate their impact on environmental pollution.
Besides, continuous environmental monitoring allows to predict
an occurrence of a dangerous situation and detect it at
the very beginning, which, in its turn, allows enough time
to make correct management decisions in production process
and to counteract emergencies, to save human health and
life.
