Technical Research on ISS Russian Segment

KAP 13 Experiment

KAP 13 experiment forms part of the research program performed by South Korean astronaut Yi So Yeon under KAP Project on the ISS RS. The research program is preparation and implemented on order by the South Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

Objective:

Testing of a small mass measurement system (SMMS) in microgravity and its using as a space balance.

Task:

Measurement of a mass of small-weight (from 50g to 200g) objects under micro-gravity environment.

Science Hardware Used:

  • Small mass measuring equipment (SMMS);

Small mass measuring equipment is a system consisting of four units, i.e. load-cell sensing unit, motor and motor driver unit, signal processing unit, and control unit.
Motor and motor driver unit is designed to generate an inertia force and accelerate a specimen and a standard mass with 0.4g to 0.5g.
Signal processing unit is a high-sensitive sensor generating an analog signal proportional to mass inertia force.

Flight Equipment Used:

  • Digital camera Nikon D2X;
  • Camcorder Sony HVR-Z1J.

Experiment Results:

Small mass measuring data and accompanying photo- and video information returned to ground.
