Technical Research on ISS Russian Segment

Experiment Sreda-MKS

Objective:

Consolidated study of the ISS dynamic characteristics; parameters defining a space position of scientific devices and attitude sensors with respect to the station hull deformation; parameters of magnetic and microgravity disturbances on board the station.

Tasks:

  • Specify dynamic parameters of the station, position of sensitive axes of the attitude sensors and devices, microgravity and magnetic disturbances.
  • Measure a kinetic moment of gyros, parameters of station attitude and spin motion after docking and undocking of transport and cargo vehicles.
  • Measure the station magnetic field, parameters of station attitude and spin motion in various operation modes of the ISS RS and USOS onboard hardware, and attitude modes used in the station flight, as well as after delivery of new equipment to the station.
  • Test mathematical methods to account atmospheric deceleration using the ground observations of a motion of the calibration sphere launched by operators from the ISS during EVA.

Science Equipment Used:

  • Calibration sphere
    (with integrated release mechanism)
  • Release mechanism

Flight Equipment Used:

  • Sensors of the guidance navigation and control system (GNCS) measuring angular velocities of the station;
  • Attitude sensors measuring the station attitude;
  • Sensors measuring kinetic moment of the gyrodynes
  • Sensors measuring rotation angles of the gyrodyne frames
  • Magnetometers measuring the magnetic field value
  • Russian and foreign accelerometers.

Expected Results:

Acquisition of initial data required for development of mathematical models of magnetic disturbances and micro g-loads, database on hardware effect on levels of magnetic disturbances, as well as dynamic operations effect on a level of micro g-loads. These models and databases are needed to plan scientific experiments on the ISS RS and account for station partners' requirements.

Experiment Results:

Telemetry measurement information from the flight sensors and scientific devices received from the station.
