Technical Research on ISS Russian Segment

Spica-S Experiment

"Spica-S" experiment is incorporated into the French research program ANDROMEDA, which is a constituent part of the "Program for implementation of scientific and application research planned for the third manned expedition ISS-3". CNES is a customer for preparing and carrying out the program of scientific and engineering experiments during the French astronaut mission to ISS RS.

This experiment is a continuation of the "EXEC" and "SPICA" experiments conducted on-board "Mir" space station since 1992. To improve the quality of experiment results a new set of scientific equipment was developed to study spectra of particles (electrons, protons, heavy ions). The results of the measurements are of mutual interest for the Russian and French researchers.

Objective:

A study of effects of space radiation on the last-generation of the off-the-shelf electronic components.

Tasks:

Measuring dynamic behavior of electronic components.
Measuring radiation environment inside ISS RS in the course of the experiment.
A set of statistical data to improve evaluation models for the risks to which the components are subjected when exposed to space radiation.
A feasibility study for the use of last-generation off-the-shelf components in space flight.

Equipment Used:

  • "SPICA-S" equipment.
