Biotechnological research on ISS Russian Segment

Experiment PCG

PCG experiment is included in the research program conducted onboard the ISS Russian Segment by spaceflight participant Richard Garriott within the framework of the GTA project.

Objective:

  • Comparing parameters of protein crystals obtained in zero-gravity with crystals obtained on Earth.
  • Obtaining protein crystals that are suitable for X-ray structure analysis.

Task:

Growing protein crystals on ISS RS.

Science Hardware Used :

  • SFP-PCG container
is a lid-covered cylinder containing PCG test-tubes and the cooling capsule - the so-called "ice bag".

The "ice bag" cooling capsule

The PCG test-tubes are to be placed around the "ice bag" capsule. The capsule is a cylinder containing a material with phase transition (with melting point of minus 30° С).

Bundled PCG test-tubes

PCG experiment uses about 1000 PCG test-tubes, each of which is filled with an individual nonpathogenic chemical substance. PCG test-tube is a sealed Tygon tube, each end of which is sealed by means of double thermal welding. PCG test-tubes are to be bundled, marked according to the test groups and frozen immediately after they are filled.

Flight Equipment Used:

  • Nikon D3 camera for taking accompanying pictures.

Experiment Results:

Protein crystals grown in microgravity, as well as accompanying photographic information on a flash memory card.
