Education and promotion of space research

Experiment Inter-MAI-75

Objective:

  • development of procedures, documentation on SC control through the example of using Sputnik LOS, setting up personal communications between users on the ground and information resources inside the ISS;
  • providing support for conducting communications sessions in the framework of activities of educational engineering science sections of universities for gaining experience in SC control;
  • development of coordination with partners during joint projects and exchange of data (engineering, procedural, payload data, etc.);
  • verifying the feasibility of incorporating into academic activities of aerospace universities in Russia and US the information and telecommunication resources, both used and produced in the course of running the experiments.

Tasks:

  • the use of equipment for transmitting video from onboard the ISS RS via a ham radio link (SSTV) and receiving it at the MAI center for receiving and processing the information.
  • performing still and video photography onboard the ISS RS following scripts.
  • conducting radio communication sessions, including sessions with transmissions of videos from onboard the ISS RS via ham radio to MAI center for reception and processing of images in order to use them in academic process when training specialists in controlling space systems operation.

The equipment to be used:

  • a complete set of radio station Kenwood TM D710;
  • laptop RSK2;
  • camcoder SONY HVR-Z7E;
  • digital camera Nikon D3X;
  • video communicator Kenwood VC-H1.

Expected results:

The experiment is aimed at joining the efforts of educational institutions and ham operators in Russia and US to develop technology and hardware to support communications and cooperative work between students and cosmonauts/astronauts to study and master the ISS control process, as well as to try out various methods for transmitting various types of data (text, voice and telemetry data, black and white and color photos and videos, etc.), obtained as a result of conducting scientific and educational experiments using ham radio equipment onboard the ISS.

Experiment results:

The results of the experiment are photographs and videos received by the principal investigator from the ISS RS.
