Cardiovector Experiment

Purpose:

Acquiring new scientific information about the role of the right and the left heart in adaptation of the blood circulation system to long-term space flight conditions.

Objectives:

  • Study of spatial energy distribution of the heart beats in weightlessness conditions using spatial ballistocardiography method.
  • Determination of relative contribution of the right and the left heart (with regard to directivity of the force vector of the blood expulsion to the lung artery and aorta) in different phases of a long-term space flight.
  • Investigation of functional reserves of the right and the left ventricles of the heart when conducting respiratory tests.
  • Study of the degree of the liquid mass redistribution in the upper compartments of the body in long-duration weightlessness conditions in different flight phases.
  • Investigation of relations between hemodynamic and energetic characteristics of the heart in different phases of a long-term space flight.
  • Investigation of processes of intracardiac interaction and control based on the variability estimate of chronotropic and inotropic factors of cardiac activity.
  • Investigation of correlation between the functional state of the heart (its energetic, regulatory and hemogynamic characteristics) in a long-term flight and the orthostatic and physical loads bearing at the initial readaptation period to predict the possible organism reactions of crewmembers when they return to the ground.

Used Science Hardware:

"Cardiovector" Set consisting of:

  • Kit "Cardiovector - Device".

Used Flight Equipment:

  • Laptop RSE-Med (Think Pad Т61p);
  • Sphygmomanometer "Tenzoplus".

Used Consumables:

  • Kit "Cardiovector - KRM";
  • Data carrier "Cardiovector - Data".

Expected Results:

As a result of carrying out Cardiovector Experiment in long-term space flights on the ISS RS it is expected to get new scientific data on:

  • spatial energy distribution of the heart beats in weightlessness conditions;
  • ratio of the right and the left heart contributions to total power of the heart beat in different phases of a long-term space flight.
  • functional reserves of the right and the left ventricles of the heart when conducting respiratory tests;
  • relation between hemogynamic and energetic characteristics of the heart in different phases of a long - term space flight;

These scientific results can be important information to solve the application tasks related to efficiency increase of the medical control system, evaluation of the fucntional state of crewmembers, prediction of orthostatic and physical loads bearing at the initial readaptation period.

Experiment Results:

All physiological data obtained during the Expedition is recorded in the internal memory of the onboard computer for medical support. After each experiment session the obtained data is copied on data carrier "Cardiovector - Data" and through data transmission channels (DTC) this data is downlinked to the ground. Upon completion of the Expedition data carrier "Cardiovector - Data" is returned to the ground.
