October 12, 2010. Baikonur launch site,
branch office of S.P. Korolev RSC Energia

A descent module (DM) was delivered to the assembly and test facility (ATF) of S.P.Korolev Baikonur Branch Office for replacing Soyuz TMA manned space vehicle DM which received comments made during the visual inspection after shipment to Baikonur complex.

This decision was taken based on the results of work of the Panel constituted by V.A.Lopota, President, General Designer of RSC Energia.

At present the instrumentation and propulsion, habitable compartments, and descent module of Soyuz TMA-20 were unmated. Preparation for assembly and tests per the approved schedule began, which calls for a three-shift work of the personnel which was strengthened by RSC Energia workers and specialists arrived simultaneously with the new DM.

For information:

  1. Comments on the transportation container and Soyuz ТМА-20 vehicle were made when the container was unloaded from the container after delivery by rail from RSC Energia to Baikonur cosmodrome.
  2. Currently about 30 Soyuz TMA-type space vehicles are in different production phases at RSC Energia. For replacing Soyuz ТМА-20 DM a decision was taken to use a completely equipped and tested DM of Soyuz ТМА-21 manned vehicle, which was manufactured according tof Soyuz TMA vehicle production schedule.
  3. Soyuz ТМА-20 processing is conducted as scheduled with the date of launch to the International Space Station (ISS) approximately in mid December 2010.
  4. RSC Energia has great experience in organization and execution of assembly and test activities of the in-plant manufacturing cycle in space vehicle ATF conditions under Soyuz, Salyut, Mir, ISS and Energia-Buran programs.
