DATA AND PLACE OF BIRTH:
February 26, 1958, Charlotte, North Caroline.
EDUCATION:
In 1980 she graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy as
a member of the first woman's team.
FAMILY STATUS: Single.
AWARDS AND RANKS:
She has a bachelor's degree of aviation technology (1980)
and master's degree of aeronautics and astronautics (1985).
WORK EXPERIENCE:
After graduating from the Air Force Academy she started
serving in the U.S. Air Force. Till 1984 she was F-16 and
F-15 armaments engineer at Aeglin Air Base in Florida.
In 1985 she came back to the U.S. Air Force Academy as an
instructor and professor assistant in aeronautics.
In 1989 she was directed to the Aerospace Test Center at
Cold-Lake Canadian Air Force air base in Alberta, where
she was selected as a candidate to 13th NASA astronaut team.
In July 1991 she finished a general space training course
as a mission specialist. S. Helms performed four space flights.
The first flight in January 13 - 19, 1993 on Endevour
(STS-54).
The second flight in September 9 -20, 1994 on Discovery
(STS-64).
The third flight from June 20 to July 7, 1996 as a payload
operations manager on Columbia (STS-78) with the Spacelab Laboratory
(LMS).
The forth flight in May 19 - 29, 2000 on Atlantis (STS-101).
On November 17, 1997 J. Helms was appointed a member of
the ISS-2 prime crew and started training with Yu. Usachev
and J. Voss.
