Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences

Professor Yuri V. Gulyaev

Yuri V. Gulyaev was born on September 18, 1935, in the Moscow region. He graduated from the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute, MPTI (1958), PhD (1962), D.Sci (1970). Professor and Head of semiconductor electronics chair in MPTI (1971), corresponding member of Ac.Sci.USSR (1979), full member (academician) of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) (1984), Division of Informatics, Computer Sciences and Automation. Since 1960 he works in the Institute of Radioengineering and Electronics (IRE) Ac.Sci.USSR as a scientist, senior scientist, and head of Department, since 1972 as Deputy Director. Since 1988 he is the Director of IRE RAS. In 1992 Professor Yuri V. Gulyaev was elected as a Member of the Presidium of of Russian Academy of Science.

Professor Yuri V. Gulyaev is a specialist in the fields of solid state physics, radiophysics, electronics and computer sciences. He is one of the founders of new scientific and technical directions: acoustoelectronics, acoustooptics, spin-wave electronics.

Yuri V. Gulyaev suggested and worked out the idea of using surface acoustic waves (SAW) in electronics, predicted and studied new type of SAW known as Bleustein-Gulyaev waves, predicted and studied a new class of transport phenomena in solids connected with the drag of electrons by the acoustic waves, studied the diffraction of light on acoustic waves in anisotropic, conductive and active media, resonance and nonlinear acoustoelectronic and acoustooptic phenomena; acoustooptic phenomena in optical fibers, studied the interaction of spin waves with electromagnetic fields and electrons in layered structures ferromagnetic-semiconductors, etc. These and other works by Yuri V. Gulyaev and his scientific school are used in new technologies of information processing and telecommunications.

Yuri V. Guluaev, together with his associates, carried out the precise measurements and dynamic mapping of physical fields and radiations of human body for the purpose of early medical diagnostics.

Main scientific results obtained by Yuri V. Gulyaev are published in more than 200 scientific articles, 50 patents and 3 monographs. In 1979 Professor Yuri V. Gulyaev was awarded the Hewlett-Packard Europhysics Prize of European Physical Society. Twice (in 1974 and 1984) he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR. In 1992 Yuri V. Gulyaev received the Konstantinov Prize of Russian Academy of Sciences for his works in electronics and computer science. In 1993 Yuri V. Gulyaev received State Prize of Russian Federation for his works on SAW-devices. In 1995 Yuri. V. Gulyaev was awarded the A.S. Popov Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his works in the field of radioengineering and electronics.

Professor Yuri V. Gulyaev is the President of the Russian A.S. Popov Scientific and Technical Society of Radioengineering, Electronics and Telecommunications; Senior Member of IEEE and Chair of the IEEE Russian Section. He is also President of the International Union of Scientific and Technical Societies and Unions of CIS countries. Yuri V. Gulyaev is Editor-in-Chief of the Scientific Journals: Radiotekhnica i Electronica, Radio and Communications Technology, Photonics and Optoelectronics, Nonlinear Applied Dynamics.

Being elected in 1989-91 People's Deputy of the USSR and Chairman of Subcommitee on Telecommunications and Informatics of Supreme Soviet of the USSR Yuri V. Gulyaev participated in working out the strategy of the development of telecommunications in USSR and in particular in Russia.
