Function

Measurements of interplanetary magnetic field, solar wind ions, energetic electrons and ions in the interplanetary medium. PLASMA-F objectives are:

solar wind monitoring for space weather forecast;
investigation of variations and fine structure of particles and magnetic field with high time resolution up to 32 Hz.

Description

PLASMA-F experiment, developed for the Russian Spectr-R mission (to be launched in 2007), includes:

magnetometer MMFF with two vector fluxgate sensors (0–32 Hz, ±1000 nT) and two search-coil sensors (0.01–100 kHz);
fast solar wind monitor BMSW with six Faraday cup sensors, providing instantaneous determination of solar wind direction, speed, ion density and temperature;
detector of energetic ions (15–3200 keV) and electrons (15–320 keV) MEP-2 with large geometrical factor;
data management system SSNI-2 with possibility of onboard data processing and 200 Gbyte of memory.

Currently flight models of the instruments are produced.
