The 1000 Brightest HIPASS Galaxies: The Optical Properties

Jerjen, Koribalski, Warren, Staveley-Smith, Ryder, Ryan-Weber + HIPASS/ZOA teams, in prep.

Abstract. ....

  • The latest statistical results of optical/HI properties for sources in the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog
(by Bradley Warren and Helmut Jerjen).

Optical data for 850 HIPASS BGC galaxies were retrieved from LEDA.

    Some figures (21-1-2002)

  • Deviations between HI and optical positions.

  • Deviations between HI and optical velocities.

  • HI position offset with respect to the optical positions.

  • Histogram of galaxy inclinations.

  • Histogram of galaxy types.

  • Log MHI versus 50% velocity width, w50i, corrected for galaxy inclination. We used 0 < i < 91 degrees (840 sources). The galaxy ESO430-G001 (HIZSS027) has w50 = 257 km/s, which leads to w50i = 962 km/s using i = 15.5 degrees. As the galaxy lies in the Zone-of-Avoidance the inclination is difficult to estimate and probably wrong in this case.
The lower limit to MHI is well described by 103.8*(w50i)2.

  • Log MHI versus 50% velocity width, w50i, corrected for galaxy inclination. We used 30 < i < 91 degrees (795 sources). The galaxy NGC5128 (Cen A) has w50 = 477 km/s, which leads to w50i = 627 km/s using i = 49.6 degrees. Its HI mass is clearly underestimated as the HI spectrum is strongly affected by HI absorption and a severe baseline ripple.
The lower limit to MHI is well described by 103.8*(w50i)2.
