ESO Collaboration

Collaboration with ESO on Instrumentation for the VLTI

Funded under the International Collaboration Project of the
MNRF Program

Proposer: J Davis

б

The Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) is an imaging optical interferometer array based on the four 8 m VLT telescopes and three 1.8 m auxilliary telescopes, all located at the Chilean VLT site. The first of the VLT 8 m telescopes will be useable in a stand-alone mode in 1999 but, before an interferometric capability becomes available, extensive tests on many optical components (passive and active) will be required. The University of Sydney Chatterton Astronomy Department, through its own work on the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI), has extensive experience in the evaluation of important VLTI sub-systems. The MNRF allocation represents a 50% contribution to the salary of a research fellow for a maximum of two years. The research fellow will work in the area of optical interference fringe visibility measurement, an area of interest for both the VLTI and SUSI.
