ATNF
Supernova Remnant Page
The ATNF is active in studies of supernova remnants, especially the remnant of SN 1897A and those associated with young pulsars.
The figure at top left is a radio image of the supernova remnant G308.8-0.1. Located near its centre is the pulsar J1341-6220, which is believed to have been produced by the same explosion which formed the remnant. Our group is studying both the pulsar and the remnant.
The figure at top right is a 9 GHz radio image of the remnant of SN
1987A obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in late
1999. Super-resolution techniques were used to reduce the effective
synthesised beamwidth to about 0.5 arcsec.
