Hi everyone,

Those of you on the ASA mailing list have already seen the following job ad for Leigh's replacement. If you know of anyone with good software skills and (preferably) a radio astronomy background who's looking for a job, please could you forward this announcement to them?

Unfortunately the application process is quite different to what most of us are used to. Applications are received through the seek.com.au web site and it seems candidates are not required to address specific selection criteria or nominate referees! However, I'm happy to provide some more details on the sorts of skills and experience that are required to help candidates write a good application (and make the selection panel's job easier!). The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) is part of
NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) - one of three facilities around the
world that supports interplanetary spacecraft communications and
radio observations for the exploration of our Solar System and
beyond. New missions from many nations signal a busy future in space
exploration.

Raytheon Australia currently has a unique opportunity for an
energetic and motivated Computer Systems Engineer / Scientist with
preferably practical experience in Radio Astronomy to join our
Systems Engineering team at Tidbinbilla. This position provides
technical, operational and R&D support as necessary to fulfill
CDSCC's commitments to Radio Astronomy activities for both local and
international observations. The successful candidate will be required
to maintain and further develop a heterogeneous network of Sun, Linux
and HP hardware and software that controls a complex system of
antenna, RF receiving and data processing equipment. In so doing, the
incumbent is expected to develop a strong working relationship with
local staff and the wider Radio Astronomy community. A Degree in an
appropriate field is required (e.g. Engineering / Physics) and the
position may require occasional international travel.
