WELCOME!

Welcome to the first issue of the APT News. It had been planned to
hold an APT meeting during this year, however, it has become clear
that the opportunity will not arise. The APT News is intended to
bridge the gap between meetings and keep APT members in touch with
developments within the region, including announcements of upcoming
conferences, short reports from conferences that have been held, news
of proposal deadlines, and Observatory resports. It is planned to have
a new issue every month or two. Contributions to the APT News are
welcomed! Requests for additions to, subtractions from, or alterations
of, the distribution list, can be directed to the address below.

CONFERENCE REPORTS

The 4th eVLBI Workshop was held from July 12-14, 2005 in Sydney. About
50 participants attended from 10 countries. The workshop included a
special "networks" day which covered technical e-VLBI networking
issues. This was well attended by networking people not usually
directly involved with e-VLBI and generated much discussion and many
ideas. Copies of the presentations at the workshop are available
on-line at http://www.atnf.csiro.au/vlbi/evlbi2005/abstract.html .

Proceedings from the 3rd eVLBI Workshop, held in Makuhari, Japan,
on October 6-7, 2004, have been published as issue No.25 of the
bi-annual IVS NICT-TDC News, and are available on-line at
http://www.nict.go.jp/ka/radioastro/tdc/news_25/pdf/tdcnews_25.pdf .

The 2005 Lake Hanas International Pulsar Symposium was held from
August 2-7, 2005 (http://www.uao.ac.cn/hanas/hanas.htm). The Symposium
was organised by Urumqi Observatory, National Astronomical
Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Symposium
concentrated on aspects of pulsar research where China has already
made significant contributions and where likely future developments
lie. The main topics were pulsar timing, pulsar emission mechanisms,
the interstellar medium, observational and data processing techniques,
recent results from large telescopes and strategies for pulsar studies
with the next-generation of large radio telescopes. Altogether there
were 103 participants, 43 from overseas, with 56 oral and 35 poster
presentations. Proceedings will be published in a supplementary issue
of the Chinese Journal of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ChJAA).
