[atnf-data-reduction] Miriad darwin_x86_64 and linux64

Greetings to Miriad users,

Some important news concerning the Mac and 64-bit Linux Miriad
systems, particularly for external users, and particularly those
who use 'mirsync'.

darwin_x86_64
-------------
Due to the demise of the machine on which the darwin_x86 system
was maintained (MacOSX 10.5 using HPC g77 3.4), the Miriad system
for Macs has changed substantially. It is now maintained on a
MacOSX 10.6.2 host (Darwin 10.2.0) using HPC gfortran 4.5.0 and
Apple gcc 4.2.1, and now only for the x86_64 architecture.

All recent Macs should be able to execute x86_64 code. If the
'arch' command reports "i386" then ignore that and instead check
that the MACHTYPE environment variable is set to "x86_64".

The new Miriad system, "darwin_x86_64", must be installed manually
as follows:

  cd $MIR/..

  wget ftp://ftp.atnf.csiro.au/pub/software/miriad/miriad-darwin_x86_64.tar.gz
  tar pxvf miriad-darwin_x86_64.tar.gz

  wget ftp://ftp.atnf.csiro.au/pub/software/miriad/miriad-common.tar.gz
  tar pxvf miriad-common.tar.gz

Then log out and back in again to get the new Miriad definitions.
After that you can use mirsync to keep darwin_x86_64 up to date.

The old darwin_x86 system is not maintained and should be deleted
once you have darwin_x86_64 installed and working. If your processor
does not support the x86_64 instruction set there is no alternative
but to build Miriad from source code.

linux64
-------
As all of our x86_64 linux hosts have now been upgraded from etch
to lenny, which supports only gfortran 4.3 in place of g77 3.4, the
Miriad linux64 build has also had to be changed.

However, 'mirsync' will update the system automatically and the
change should be largely transparent provided that you have
libgfortran.so.3 and a recent-enough version of libc.so.6
('readelf -V /lib/libc.so.6 | grep GLIBC_2.7' should find something).
If not, and you can't install them, then building Miriad from source
code is the only alternative.

linux
-----
Advance notice is given that the 32-bit (x86) linux Miriad system
will be going the same way as the others in due course.

No changes are anticipated for the sun4sol system.
