VACANCY - Astrophysics Research Scientist

The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), a Division of CSIRO, and one of the world's leading radio astronomical facilities, seeks a highly skilled Research Scientist to engage in original and independent astrophysics research using ATNF and other world-class facilities.

The ATNF operates the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Mopra 22-m telescope, the Parkes 64-m telescope, and the Long Baseline Array (LBA). It provides access to powerful broadband correlators supporting observations in the range of 1-100 GHz. Design efforts are now focused on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a powerful new instrument for high dynamic range, wide-field radio astronomy that will be sited in Western Australia at the Australian SKA candidate site.

Astrophysics staff members also play a key role within the ATNF by interacting closely with the technical staff who are designing next generation instrumentation and with the operations staff when subsequently commissioning that new instrumentation.

Strong areas of current research for ATNF Astrophysics staff are in studies of (1) pulsars, (2) the interstellar medium and star formation, (3) nearby galaxies, (4) active galactic nuclei and radio galaxies.

The successful candidate is likely to have (1) about 5 years of research experience in radio astronomy, (2) an affinity for new instrumentation design and commissioning, (3) an outstanding publication record and (4) a demonstrated capability for innovative research.
