(GrangeNet)

GrangeNet Roadshow - Markus Buchhorn and Paul Davis

GrangeNet operates a multi-gigabit research and education network, from
Melbourne to Brisbane, supporting grid and advanced communications services. It
aims to support the broadest possible community of researchers, ranging from
network engineers and computer scientists through to (for example) astronomers,
bioinformaticians, distance educators and linguists. Activities on the network
include high-performance computing, large-scale distributed data archives,
online instruments, advanced telecollaboration and networked visualisation.
For astronomers, GrangeNet will allow you to access resources within Australia, in a
faster, and smarter, way than ever before. This could include -
high-performance computing resources (combining access to various HPC
centres, allowing you to run much larger simulations/analyses) -
large scale data archives, e.g. virtual observatory projects, where
massive archives of diverse material can be made available online,
and readily searchable, and (importantly) integrated with other
archives, so you can do e.g. multi-wavelength/instrument analyses of
objects. - online instruments, accessing facilities within Australia
and overseas, and providing you with a 'virtual telescope
console'.
