Timing, polarimetry and physics of a bright nearby millisecond pulsar -- Stefan Oslowski Colloquium

In this talk I will briefly outline numerous applications of pulsar timing to demonstrate that these objects are extremely versatile laboratories of physics. My PhD thesis addressed the issue of the ultimate limits of precision pulsar timing. While pursuing the best achievable timing, we understood that a stochastic noise intrinsic to the pulsar is currently limiting the timing of a bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. This limitation will be more important for future generations of radio telescope such as SKA or FAST. Finally I'll present preliminary constraints on the emission mechanism and physics of the magnetosphere we arrived at while trying to improve the timing precision.
