Dear Colleagues,
This is the second announcement of the Chandra Data Reduction
workshop that will be held at the University of Tasmania, Hobart on
21-22 Feb. Please bring this meeting to the attention of anyone who
might be interested, including overseas visitors. This is part of a
series of meetings supported by the MNRF International Collaboration
committee. We are seeking to foster the growth of an X-ray astronomy
community in Australia. Students are especially encouraged to attend,
and there is a limited amount of money for assistance. Please note
that there a only a few places left, and accommodation is being
finalised. Late applicants will have to arrange their own.
A poster has been sent out to all groups and departments, a copy of
which is at http://www-ra.phys.utas.edu.au/~cws/cws-poster.pdf

A Chandra Data reduction workshop
U. of Tasmania, 21-22 February 2002, Hobart, Australia
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
We are running a two day school on how to use the Chandra X-ray
telescope. We intend that this workshop will also foster the growth
of an active X-ray community in Australia. The school will cover the
procedure of data reduction, access of the archives and the
requirements for proposals. People should come to the workshop with a
Chandra object(s) in mind that they would like to analyse. The next
proposal deadline will be around March 2002, so it will be very
beneficial to have this opportunity to discuss your ideas.
The ideas for discussion should be submitted at the latest in the week
before the meeting, so we can download relevant data sets and read the
proposal to provide comments.
Goals
1. To cover the mechanisms of X-ray production
2. To explore overlaps with Australian resources
3. To master data analysis for Chandra observations
4. To encourage collaborations on proposals for the next observing season.
Speakers
* Eric Gotthelf, Columbia
* Paul Nulsen, U. Wollongong
* Andrew Melatos, U. Melb.
* Helen Johnston, U. Syd.
* Some one from CXC, Harvard

Requirements
1. Student participation will be favoured. There are limited funds
for assistance.
2. Suggestions for interesting data sets from the archive are
encouraged
3. We will have a session in which we will discuss potential
proposals. All participants are encouraged (but not required) to
have drafted out a proposal for the Chandra telescope. These will
form the basis of the discussions on day two. Assistance will be
given to strengthen and clarify these proposals.
The draft proposal needs only to be an outline a page or so
long. The discussion session will address observational
restrictions that need consideration and weaknesses that need to
be answered. If you are submitting a proposal (and I strongly
encourage you to do so) please could do so as soon as possible to
assist the organisers.
Accommodation is being organised, it please register now to be sure
of a bed.
If you wish to attend please complete the online registration
form. There may well be someone who told me that they would like
to come, but has not filled in the form. Please do NOT rely on my
memory - it is broken. A registration fee of $20 is required, to
cover the coffee. Students have been exempted.
The conference dinner will be at the Mount Nelson Signal Station
Licensed Restaurant at $40 a head.
