HIZOA J0836-43: a massive galaxy
by Bärbel Koribalski (CASS)
The galaxy HIZOA J0836-43 was discovered by Donley et al. (2006) in the Parkes HI Survey of the Zone of Avoidance (HIZOA) and is also detected in the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). At a Galactic latitude of only -1.64 degr its stellar disk/bulge is nearly completely obscured by the Milky Way. The extended neutral hydrogen disk of HIZOA J0836-43, mapped with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, is at least 130 kpc in diameter (top panels) and rotates with over 300 km/s (bottom panels). We measure 7.5 × 1010 solar masses of hydrogen (for a distance of 148 Mpc) and derive a total dynamical mass of 1.4 × 1012 solar masses.
