Icy Origins: Snowlines During Star and Planet Formation
Dr Karin Oberg
Thursday, Jan 9, 2014 at 8:00 PM

This month’s speaker will be Professor Karin Oberg from the Harvard Smithsonian CfA. Professor Oberg joined the Harvard faculty as an assistant professor in 2013 and also works in the Radio and GeoAstronomy division of the CfA with a current focus on star and planet formation. In the cold and dense stages of star and planet formation, volatile molecules condense out on interstellar grains forming icy mantles. This condensation process results in a series of snowlines, or condensation fronts, whose exact locations are set by a combination of thermal and non-thermal processes. The nature of these snowlines in protoplanetary disks are predicted to have large impacts on planet formation efficiencies, on the bulk compositions of the forming planets, and on the amount of prebiotic material available on planet surfaces. Professor Oberg will discuss the results of her research into these mechanisms using a combination of IR and millimeter observations, theory, and laboratory experiments.

Please join us for a pre-meeting dinner discussion at Changsho, 1712 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA at 6:00pm before the meeting.
