Big Science with "Mini" Telescopes: Mapping the Galaxy from NYC, Cambridge, and Chile.
Dr Thomas Dame
Thursday, Nov 14, 2013 at 8:00 PM

The ATMoB was founded in 1934 with the cooperation of the great astronomer Harlow Shapley. In an office directly above the long-time meeting place of the group, Phillips Auditorium, Dr. Shapley spent decades studying the structure of our Galaxy. Even higher above Phillips sits a small radio telescope that has likewise been studying the Galaxy for decades. In this talk, Dr. Dame will tell us about the history of this instrument and its twin down in Chile. He will describe how radio data can be used to map the Galaxy, why it is so difficult and time consuming, and how some of the major scientific achievements of the instruments were made, including the recent discovery of two new Galactic spiral arms.

Please join us for a pre-meeting dinner discussion at Changsho, 1712 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA at 6:00pm before the meeting.
