SSG built and delivered the fore-optics assembly for M3, an imaging spectrometer which is one of two instruments provided by NASA for the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, India’s first lunar orbiter, which was launched in October 2008. Currently in a 100 km polar orbit around the moon, M3 is providing high resolution special and spectral maps of the entire lunar surface, specifically with regards to the mineralogical makeup of the moon's crust and impact craters. Bob will talk about the telescope, and also describe some of the results from the M3’s first few months in lunar orbit.
SSG built and delivered the 40 cm aperture all-aluminum WISE to the Space Dynamics Lab, for launch aboard a Ball Aerospace spacecraft in November 2009. The seven month mission will create a full sky survey in the 3 to 25 µm wavelength range, and will study brown drawrfs, asteroids, and the most luminous infrared galaxies.
Bob Benoit has been with SSG for more than 25 years, as an optical systems engineer, project manager and currently the Manager of the Optics Division. He has been involved in many types of projects requiring optical components, including ground test stations, aircraft, rocket and shuttle based payloads, planetary orbiters, and deep space payloads.
Please join us for a pre-meeting dinner discussion at Changsho, 1712 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA at 6:00pm before the meeting. |
