Supernova SN2014J in M82 A Type 1a supernovae has exploded in the irregular galaxy M82. Type 1a supernovae are used as “standard candles” and they have a known relationship between the peak brightness and its rate of decay. They can be used to accurately measure the distance to the galaxy.
