My Co-worker Fenny at the Beijing Planetarium

Fenny is an engineer on my Motorola Beijing team. She has been to the US several times, and on each visit she enjoys looking through the scopes at the clubhouse. This was her turn to show me around her hometown, and on this day we had a great time touring the planetarium.

Scopes for Sale at the Beijing Planetarium

I was surprised that the prices were close to what you'd spend online at Orion Telescopes. I expected them to be much less. But hey, this WAS a museum so I shouldn't have expected any bargains.

Solar Telescope Projection at the Beijing Planetarium

They had a solar telescope on the roof of the planetarium, and through a clock drive and some mirrors, projected a 1.5 meter view of the sun, spots and all, for people inside to view. Using some beam splitters, they also had a spectrographic display and this, a small solar projection where you could trace sunspots onto paper to take with you. Alas - no good sunspots, but it was impressive nevertheless.
