Arcetri Correlation Spectrometer

ARCOS - Arcetri Correlation Spectrometer

Now operating at the Medicina and Noto Radio telescopes.

This instrument is a spectometer with

  • maximum instantaneous bandwidth of 160 MHz
  • minimum instantaneous bandwidth of 150 KHz
  • up to 4096 spectral channels
  • maximum resolution of 40 Hz (8.4 m/s at 1.4 GHz)

It is based on the correlation chip developed at the NFRA (Holland) (Albert Bos chip). The control software has been developed using Object Oriented analysis and modelling techniques (Arcetri report 3/98).

The instrument is currently used at the Noto and Medicina radio telescopes (operating frequencies from 1.4 GHz to 43 GHz) and with the Tirgo infrared telescope

The instrument is not publicly accessible, i.e. we have not facilities to allow a generic observer to come at Medicina and do some observations. It can however be used by an external observer, if he/she is willing to do some effort and learn how to use it.

To use the instrument, the observer must prepare a scientific proposal, and taking agreements with our staff (contact person: Francesco Palagi ) for training/technical infos.

Eventually, when the proposal is finalized, one must submit it to the Istituto di Radioastronomia, to obtain telescope time. No remote observing or service observing is provided: you will have to come and do your observations.
