Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 - Hubble Space Telescope

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 - Hubble Space Telescope

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragment G impact site on Jupiter

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9
Hubble Space Telescope image of Jupiter showing the impact site of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragment G. The image was taken on 18 July 1994 about an hour and 45 minutes after the impact. The impact site is the dark round area below and right of the center of the frame, at about 45 S latitude. Note the asymmetry of the circular features. The fragments of Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacted Jupiter at about 60 km/s and left traces in the atmosphere which could be observed for many weeks. Jupiter has a diameter of 140,000 km and north is at 10:00. (HST, SL9G-5)
Full resolution size: 154k
