Sviluppo di prototipi di componenti a microonde attraverso il processo di elettroformatura

Technical note

100 GHz horn prototype measurements
Author: Summary
This document is intended to give measurement results related to two 100 GHz horns fabricated by Media Lario S.r.l. and designed by the Microwave Engineering Centre for Space Applications (MECSA) in the framework of an Italian Space Agency (ASI) funded project, entitled `Sviluppo di componenti a microonde attraverso il processo di elettroformatura'. The horn designed has been carried out according to the ALMA band 3 specifications. The measurements have been made at the Institut de RadioAstronomie MillimИtrique (IRAM) in Grenoble (FR). Tests have bee made on the field pattern and the reflection coefficient. In this note, amplitude and phase patterns, for the E-plane and H-plane are given. The reflection coefficient measurements are given in the band 84-115 GHz. Comparison with simulated data are also shown. In the amplitude patterns it has to be noticed the fair shape of the main beam and quite good features in terms of azimuthal symmetry. The results agree very well with simulations. The phase diagrams are quite flat in the region corresponding to the maximum amplitude radiation. Because the measurements have been made by rotating the horn under test on the expected phase centre we conclude that the estimation of the phase centre position does agree well with tests. The reflection coefficient is measured in the configuration with the horn attached to transition between a circular waveguide to a standard WR10 rectangular waveguide. The results show e reflection coefficient widely below 20dB with a mean value between 25 and 30 dB. It has not been possible to remove the effects of the transition in the reflection coefficient; however the open ended transition has been measured and by the shown results we argue that the transition effects predominate. So we conclude that the reflection coefficient of the horn is fairly better than the already good reflection coefficient measured. By conclusion we say that measurements have been shown very good results and demonstrating the validity of the design and fabrication procedures adopted.
