Over 140 countries are participating in the festivities and events are taking place throughout the year in regional, national and global centres. IYA 2009 encourages people to get involved in astronomy and gives first hand access not only to the many wonders of the night sky but also promotes the formation of friendships and connections between the general public, amateur and professional astronomers and science centresá  and educators worldwide.
