Maybe you have seen one of the alarming videos or emails circulating around the internet claiming that the End is Nigh. The claim is that an enormous dinosaur-killer of an asteroid is going to smash into the Earth sometime between 15-28 September 2015. The scary predictions say that the asteroid will come down in the Atlantic Ocean near Puerto Rico, causing a Á300ft tsunamiÁ and a ÁMagnitude 12Á earthquake which will lay waste to the eastern seaboards of the USA, Mexico and central and southern American nations (European nations will be devastated, specifically Spain, Holland and England, too). Thirty million lives will be lost in the month after the impact, and 40 million more are destined to die from plagues and in civil disorder in the following seven months. Is this terrifying vision of the future going to happen? Unsurprisingly the answer is absolutely no. This prediction is false.
(UPDATE: As nothing happened in September some people are now claiming that an asteroid will impact the Earth in December 2015. This new prediction is also false.)

This prediction is not based on science. No known asteroid or comet is on a collision course with Earth. I am only writing about this nonsensical claim because over the years I have learned that there are people who become genuinely distressed and anxious by false predictions of disaster like this. (If you are very worried by this false story and in live in the UK, why not call AnxietyUK on 08444 775774 to discuss your concerns with a sympathetic listener? Similarly if you live in the USA, there are resources listed on the ADAA website that you may find helpful.)
The claim that this doomsday asteroid is heading our way apparently originated from one Reverend Efrain Rodriguez who has since 2010 promoted in videos and interviews his belief that this forthcoming disaster has been divinely revealed to him. Rodriguez does not claim to have discovered the asteroid or to have calculated its orbit, contending instead that its approach was supernaturally announced to him. He says
“God showed me a large rock, an Asteroid, entering the airspace of the town of Arecibo in Puerto Rico, and exiting Mayagöźez, heading to the ocean. This will be atá 2am. This rock will be making impact in the sea between the island of Mona and Mayagöźez. It will hit an active earthquake fault found in that area of the Caribbean, causing a very strong 12 point earthquake that has never been seen. 12 degrees means the Presence of God on the Earth.“
He sent NASA a letter in November 2012 outlining his bleak view of the future but received no response. I imagine it was filed under ÁGÁ for Garbage.á Rodriguez says that world governments are aware of the approaching menace but are cynically going to evacuate their leaderships to safety without warning the general populace because a population reduction suits their globalist political agenda. However Rodriguez also disapprovingly says that the USA is planning to try to avert disaster:
“They are preparing spacecrafts to receive and destroy the asteroid upon arrival to Earth. Also, Obama sent about 40 missiles to PR [Puerto Rico], to try to destroy the asteroid in the sky, so that it may fall on Puerto Rico, and not at sea. The prophet of God Efrain warned them not to press the Buttons “Do No do it!” á he said. “Do Not interfere with the plans of the Lord.”
In reality, no such spacecraft or missiles exist. His belief that even attempting to save millions ofá human lives is wrong says much about Rev. Rodriguez and his theology. He seems to preach a grim gospel of despair, offering no future but misery to his congregations.
To be fair to Rodriguez, he seem to have disassociated himself from the September 2015 dates, but these are being promoted by his followers notably someone operating under the name “Light of Mary”. Rodriquez professes that the impact is definitely coming but he cannot say exactly when (except that the impact will occur at 2am and there will be a full Moon in the sky). A lunar eclipse (which is not called a “blood moon”) will be visible over the Americas and western Europe on 28 September 2015á (for more on this amazing spectacle- you should go outside and watch it- see our article The Truth About the Blood Moon Tetrad) and some disaster hoax proponents declare this to be ominous but this is, like all prophesies of doom linked to eclipses, merely superstitious nonsense.
It is significant that Rodriguez has in the past stated precise dates for his apocalypse (in 2013 and 2014) but these have passed by without incident. Rodriguez has also predicted other events, notably the death of one his critics, but none of these have happened either. Rev. Rodriguez is unsure of the disaster’s timing but is certain of its location. According to him Puerto Rico is to be devastated because of its (in his view) uniquely sinful society. In his own words:
“Puerto Rico will be the epicenter of Jehovah’s wrath. The island is polluted with sin, adulterers parade in churches, pastors just want tithes and offerings“

Despite his hopeless message and failed prophesies, Rodriguez has many followers worldwide who have proclaimed him to be a prophet and compare him to Noah and Abraham. Rev. Rodriguez makes no secret of his strong political opinions (he seems to intensely dislike President Obama) which are heavily featured in his proclamations. Thanks to the currently remarkably toxic and irrational political climate in the USA this has meant his views have been even more widely circulated by people who may not believe in his apocalyptic visions but want to promote his paranoid-seeming current affairs agenda.
Among many unusual declarations from Rodriguez are his support for claims that guillotines have been procured for future executions of those who criticise President Obama and that thousands of French, German, Russian and Chinese soldiers are already stationed in Puerto Rico with the intention of seizing control from the local authorities after the disaster (surely if Rodriguez is correct about the impact zone, Puerto Rico would be among the worst places to base this invasion force…) Ridiculous as these may sound, unfortunately thousands of people seem to take these seriously. Deliberately adding to the confusion were other lying emails and YouTube videos alleging that “Jade Helm“, a US military exercise scheduled for 15 July to 15 September 2015, was really a cover for disaster preparations. The military finished and packed up their gear on 15 September without incident.

Of course there is a very, very small chance that in the near future a dangerous impact could occur. Astronomers around the world know of 1593 Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) at the time of writing. This may sound an alarming large number but the criteria to be put on the list is very wide. PHAs are broadly defined as all asteroids 150 m (500 ft) or more in diameter which could come within 0.05 au (about 7.5 million km or 4.65 million miles) of Earth. This distance is about twenty times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
Objects on the PHA list are monitored and the details of their orbits refined to predict the possibility of close approaches to Earth. One asteroidá on the PHA list, 2014 UR116, has been linked by some parties to Rodriguez’s false prediction. Discovered by Russian scientists, asteroidá 2014 UR116 poses no impact threat to Earth (or any other planet) for at least the next 150 years.
Other asteroids, 2012 TT5 and 2015 GA14,á have been untruthfully named by some websites and newspapers (whose editors should be ashamed of themselves) as possible impacting objects in September 2015. Again these tales are incorrect, on 23 September 2015 GA14 will pass about 0.2 au (1au=93 million miles or 150 million km) of Earth, so it will miss Earth by 30 million km! On 24 September 2015 2012 TT5 will come to about 0.055 au of Earth, so it is going to miss Earth by 5 million miles! During this “close approach” 2012 TT5 will be twenty times further than the Moon from the Earth. Sadly one website which I refuse to link to or publicize has claimed that NASA has marked 2012 TT5 as 6 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale . This is false, all known objects (as of early September 2015) are rated at o on the Torino Scale (=”the likelihood of a collision is zero, or is so low as to be effectively zero”) .
No comets or asteroids are currently known to be on orbits which will ever cause them to collide with Earth.
Compared with other natural disasters such as earthquakes and severe storms, the hazard from asteroid or comet impacts is small.
Reverend Rodriguez has no known scientific qualifications or connections. His prophesy of disaster is nonsense and appears largely based on his religious and political prejudices. Science has not predicted that a giant asteroid or comet is going to devastate Earth this September. If anyone sends you an email or a link to a video about this foolishness read or watch them if you really want but please do not take them seriously. The people who spread this sort of stuff ought to be ashamed of themselves.
(UPDATE: As nothing happened in September some of the supporters of Reverend Rodriguez are now claiming that an asteroid will impact the Earth in December 2015. Once again this new prediction is false.)

The asteroid is not going to hit us because God said that he will protect us. So I trust in God that he will keep his promise.

If there was such an asteroide in which I believe there is. We would be able to see it for our selfs by now seeing we only have one week today till the 24th September. Dear Issac, asteroids and comets orbit the Sun, so there is a limited range of velocities they can have. Basically anything that impacts the Earth will have a speed (with respect to the Earth) of between 11-72km/s. If you go to this website you can play around with different impact parameters.

Numerous lines of evidence suggest that the entire Solar System including Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Human evolution is not my field but I understand the earliest known fossils of hominins date pack to about 2.8 million years ago.
It’s not really a question of belief. Evidence shows than life has evolved over time rather than appearing suddenly in its current forms.

Do I believe in and trust our Government? No I dont, but I will tell you what I do believe in! I believe in God and I trust in him to warm me when things are about to happen. I feel I will see things as they are and know that touble is in the way. I am not only a child of God but I am also his creation, he trusted in me enough to give me life and I trust in him to protect the life that he has created! So regardless of what the media is saying the rapture is coming. You better hope you are right with God before it happens because if not there will be no mercy for those who do not believe in the God that helped give life to the people who have helped destroy what it was that God created for the people.

Interesting article. I find it scary that you mention hotlines for those who become anxious when they hear about life changing events such as this. Its ok to worry about some things. Call a hotline and be put on a list. It doesn’t matter if you are American or work for the gov, all countries are connected in one form or another regardless of the b.s. they spew. Its all a show intending to confuse everyone so its easier to implement one world gov. You are probably a space geek that is genuinely trying to ease everyone minds, but you could just as easily be working for them. Also, I have to rely an others for research. I can’t afford or have time to do my own research, like others, I have to cipher through the true and false. Everyday it gets harder and harder. The Satanists do a good job of blurring the lines. I would need to read 100 articles from around the globe to determine if what you are saying is true and even then I would be on the fence.
Dear Bill, I think you need to concentrate on professional astronomy sources to confirm the truth here. Reading a hundred articles is no help if 99 of them are misinformed or incorrect!
If it is not true… why our government is preparing the people for a possible strong earthquake. I believe the NASA would’nt want us to get panic, but sometimes giving us hint about the real situation is much better so that we could at least spend much time with our family.

If the other planets are not heating up also, then why is another giant spot forming on Jupiter? Why was there also a massive global wide storm on Saturn that ended only when the giant storm ate its own tail? To top off Saturn’s spectacular display, Jupiter formed a ring storm in its upper latitudes like Saturn’s that also went around the entire planet and like Saturn it too ate its own tail and dissipated. Both storms are evidence of planetary wide global heating. A moon of Neptune heated up and gave off methane into space from its frozen state.
I’m pretty sure there are no humans on Jupiter or Saturn and even if some are, there are not enough of them to create the heat by driving Jovian Inc. SUVs around both planets upper latitudes. No factories spewing billowing clouds of pollution in Neptune’s environs either.
Before you claim this is a figment of my imagination, go online and google the two storms and you can see for your yourself stunning full color HD pictures of both storms from only two years ago. Read about the moon of Neptune. The sun is the great weather maker in our solar system and I really object to you dismissing what is a minor 1/13th of 1 degree uptick in the Sun’s output and claiming that we are the one’s causing the heat on our planet. Be thankful that its not a 1/6 of one degree output increase by the sun or we would we have a 99% extinction event like we did 350 million years ago when surface temperatures hit over 150 degrees.
Dear Thomas, thanks for your comments but I’m not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your research and conclusions. There have been significant changes observed in the atmospheres of the giant planets as long as we have observed them with telescopes, so there is nothing new or anomalous about anything happening on Jupiter or Saturn recently. Note that these planets’ own internal heat drives their climate to a large extent.
You are correct in saying Neptune’s moon Triton has warmed faster than expected but this seems in no way connected to the Sun’s output. There are other more important factors making it a complicated process, for example as the moon’s surface warms (as it gets closer to the Sun), ices on its surface turn into gas, both changing the reflectivity (and therefore ability to absorb heat) of the surface and increasing the density of Triton’s atmosphere (which doubled in mass in a decade). Although we do not fully understand Triton’s atmosphere and climate as we don’t have enough data, we cannot say the the tiny variations in the Sun’s output are major drivers in the observed changes.
By the way, this is an interesting topic but considerably off the topic of this post, so I hope you will understand that I do not propose to continue discussing solar and planetary science issues there.

Heh, it bothers me the most out of anyone here, since I’m Puerto Rican. Apparently, our lives aren’t important enough compared to the rest of the first world lives that will be affected. What do they know that we do not? FEMA region 3 has had the greatest buildup of post disaster supplies. So will this be a heavenly event, or a man-made event to deceive the masses. I think I’ve already said the Chelyabinsk meteoroid was a small object (about 20 m diameter). Small objects are harder to see when they are far away than large objects, so we often only see asteroids this size when they are close to Earth. Unfortunately in the final days of its approach towards Earth the Chelyabinsk meteoroid was indeed too close to the Sun in the sky to be spotted (for obvious reasons most telescopes are not pointed near the Sun). It was unfortunate but it’s unlikely to happen again. This fake prediction calls for an asteroid at least 1km across to hit Earth. An object this size would have been seen by now. By the way I must remind you that NASA is not the same thing as the world-wide astronomical community. No one in the world spotted the Chelyabinsk meteoroid approaching, so NASA should not be blamed.
Yes, and I’m delighted by them! But I hope you’ve noticed that these missions are planned years in advance (I believe ESA’s Rosetta mission has been twenty years in preparation) plus none of them are to object which could collide with Earth.

On topic: Like you said, admin, i don’t think the entire astronomical comunity would keep some thing like this a secret. There would be some scientists warning us if there was a major threat in the skies. Still, if there was a large rock heading towards Earth, i believe Nasa and other authorities would do their best to avoid a major impact by trying either to modify the asteroid’s trajectory or by blowing it to smaller pieces so the force of the impact would be diminished.
The only disaster that may occur in the near future, will be created by the continuosly escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, drawing everyone from the European Union in the conflict as well as NATO members, and not by some asteroid which will instantly teleport close to earth and hit us.

Dear Daniele, the Isaac Newton story is untrue and has been made up recently. It is not centuries old. There is going to be lunar eclipse in September and it will be fascinating to watch but this has no magical meaning. You read about it in our article The Truth About the Blood Moon Tetrad (which points our that “Blood Moon” is a silly and superstitious term invented only recently by people who are setting out to frighten).

i feel the same way as you. i’m a christian myself, and people in my christian community even say that this is all fake. the point of the “end times” is that so you will always be good. god will not mark a date when he will come, or else that would make people anxious and automatically pray to god and try to get to heaven. god will not mark a date, he is coming when he comes. that’s why there is “final judgement”. the end times will never be known, so people will be rightfully punished by sins, and rightfully rewarded for being good.

No this is not at all. These people that are using scripture are using the judgement parts of Revelation out of sequence. They prey on people’s fear and lack of knowledge of the scripture to promote their own agenda. They may be doing this out of a motive desiring an expected end, but our Lord never used evil or wrong to get his message out, and neither should we. This is part of that sequence. The New World Order has to be in effect first. Then ten rulers will govern over the world that will be partitioned into ten areas. Then three of these rulers will be removed and one of the seven will rise up to become the ruler of the world. This man will be the Anti-Christ, and He will make a seven year pact with Israel. There are a whole lot of other things that we could go into, but this is not the forum in which to do that in. What may happen and nobody really knows, is that the stock markets around the world may drop significantly causing panic as what happened in 1929. Don’t worry about an asteroid or meteorite.

Back in 1979 my maths teacher earnestly and forcefully told the class that the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that had just been signed had been prophesied in the Book of Revelation. This meant, he said, that within seven years the Antichrist would rule the Earth in a reign of terror and there would be a nuclear war. These were going to happen with complete certainty.

Well, all during Sep 2015, NASA said no asteroid would hit Earth on Sep. 24th as the Youtube videos said.
Then, at 3AM on Sep 24th, 2015, NASA detected an asteroid the size of a bus, that just missed Earth by 18,300 miles on Sep 23rd! 18,300 miles is BELOW the orbit of most satellites, which are at 22,600 miles. And 18,300 miles is 7.67% of the average distance (239,000 miles) between the Earth and Moon.
I am not an Astronomer, but less than 8% of the Earth-Moon distance seems kind close!
NASA said they did not initially see the bus-sized Rock since it “came from the direction of the Sun and the Sun’s glare blinded our telescopes!

NASA has a site to check. Look for NEO’s Near Earth Objects. Shows everything being watched. The Asteroid in question being 2014ur116 had the orbit calculated properly and is not in line for Earth contact. The wise open minded person puts in a little research.

i agree. these things frighten me. i will always check all the NASA websites, do everything i can to find evidence this is fake. i’m not gonna say “god is real and he would never kill us” because that would be debatable, but in my religion, they say that the rapture is gonna happen, it would be the final judgement day. it would be unlikely for god to tell someone from an island “that contains adulterers and sinners” that they are gonna be judged soon.

NASA only knows of and tracks roughly 2% of NEOs by their own admission. THAT 2% accounts for around 13,000 objects. Based on these numbers, that leaves 627,000 NEOs unaccounted for. While I’m not “supporting” this theory, one has to admit that there are MANY scenarios that ALL astronomers are unaware of and/or unprepared for.
On that basis, let’s not (any of us) sit here and act as if we can refute ANY prediction made. That includes you, Mr. All-knowing Admin.
Dear Educated, thanks for your comments. Without context “627,000 NEOs unaccounted for” sounds as though we might have something to be scared of. By 2011, 93% of the NEAs larger than 1 km across had been discovered with an estimate of 70 left to be found. The 627000 is mostly made of objects to too small to have any major effect on the Earth.

The same ‘scientists’ you are looking for also missed the mark with the Russian meteor a couple of years back. My point is they did not see it coming and those were scientists. The vast amount of us that do believe something is coming do so because we do not believe the government would release the data even if they knew. It would cause mass panic. So why is the government also creating very large tunnels miles underground? they are doing if for something. I won’t sit here and say Sept 2015 is when it happens, but I won’t bury my head in the sand and believe: 1:) It will not ever happen or 2:) If we knew something was coming and we could not do anything to prevent it. The government(s) would not tell the people. I think that is a sensible approach (scientific or not).
Dear Dbatim, thank you for your comments. I would just like to say that the the 2013 Russian meteoroid was tiny compared to the object Rodriguez claims is approaching which must be kilometres across, an object this size approaching Earth would be observed well in advance.
This suggests you believe that “the government” (which one?) has a monopoly on astronomical research. I believe this is untrue, I do not have the statistics but I’m pretty sure the vast majority (say 95%) of astronomers world-wide are not employed by their states.

The debris of the asteroid hit was NEVER seen in the cloud of smoke it made. Its like our weather, blame El Nino not Alaska ionosphere Microwavo. I live in the Ozark mountains in Missouri, this being in the United States, and can tell you that there are several underground tunnels, including several food manufacturers that have distribution centers underground, Kraft being the closest to me. This I know, because the transportation company I work for delivers and ships from there. His comment about the US government not telling the masses of a disastrous event happening are spot on. He explained this very clearly. It would cause mass panic. Much like the riots that happened at Walmart last year when the food stamp cards stopped working for several hours. People would be scared to go to work, the roads would be packed with people trying to flee major cities, riots and looting, etc. The list can go on. Three days without the elaborate transportation industry running smoothly is enough to destroy the very fabric of our economy alone. Whether or not there is a legitimate comet, meteor, or asteroid coming next month is disputable. Personally I do not believe it is coming until I see hard evidence, however, I do not disregard the possibility of such an event happening. I do find it difficult to believe this when there is a new end time event happening every three months, and yet nothing ever happens.

Your article was very reassuring and extremely helpful. I guess the situation is not helped by the fact that the New York Fed has been working hard to build up a satellite office in Chicago and NORAD has decided to move back into the base deep inside Cheyenne Mountain after a very long period of time. There is also the mystery of Jade Helm which is scheduled to be conducted by the US Army in multiple states from July 15 to September 15 2015.
It would be really good if you could find out why these things are happening and continue to reassure people that a natural disaster is not eminent.

To the best of my knowledge NORAD never left Cheyenne Mountain (the command centre there is just a backup to another one at Peterson Air Force Base, USAF’s Space Control Center did move out of Cheyenne Mountain but this not the same body as NORAD). I’m happy to accept I’m wrong about this as I’m not an expert about this. Do you have any sources saying otherwise?

The worldwide scientific community’s ethos are based on obtaining results and accurately reporting and discussing them. There is also healthy competition among researchers to be first to announce a discovery. I cannot see how concealing the existence of an astronomical body would benefit anyone.
You must know that statement is not correct. The real Universe operates under a set of laws (most of which are well understood) which constrain what events are possible.

You cant help people latching onto groups with a distinct fear set over predictions and so fourth when the reality of things going on around them are given so little regard, and are no less destabilizing their basic faiths in all things standaridized from the past.
I dont know that any comet is coming, I dont discount its possibility, I have yet to see A SINGLE impact PRE-Reported by nasa or any world agency, so you dont have alot of standing here to naysay on prediction. I have a family member that builds satellites, a landmark member for a nation without a lot of history in that field. I warned him of building with thoughts to dealing with the solar flare activity just a few years ago. He discounted it as well, and his satellite suffered the damage and he still doesnt know what to make of that warning from a non-standard scientist with pedigree.
I said the same to him that I will tell you, even if you dont believe, the costs of taking it within “possibilities” to work a bit of prevention into your life are next to nothing. While I may not be a fully degreed thinker, I am forever cross referencing the fields of science, which for all their focus and intensity individually, they have yet to do themselves with any real strength.
The fields often due to their narrow focus fail to notice things that could greatly enhance, or prove true to theirs and others. I have several inventions, and builds that are due to this lack of involvement and awareness between many different fields. I have pointed groups to discoveries that were “beliefs” for hundreds of years and believed to be mere stories, but with science fields that didnt work together they had the information there for decades only waiting to be correlated.
I dont ask your religious faiths, or personal beliefs, but I do ask that you realize alot of truths are yet to be accepted nor realized. We all work for the good intentions, or we wouldnt be doing what we do individually.

Yes, that happened but the crucial words are “bus sized”. Small objects like 2014 EC are hard to spot, and would cause destruction in the vicinity if they impacted but are not going to cause devastation on the scale of the object needed for this false prediction. This would need an impactor several kilometres across and larger objects this size are far more easily seen. It is hard to see how we would not see one approaching.
I have seen nothing about concerns about emergency preparations in the city of Birmingham for 23 September 2015. After some searching I see there is an annual trade fair for emergency services held there that week (see http://www.emergencyuk.com/). A trade fair is not the same as an emergency mobilisation for an asteroid impact!
This is is not a current affairs blog and I am not addressing paranoid conspiracy theories about terrorism here.
That is not true and suggests you misunderstand the nature of science which is entirely evidence-based. I would note here that the people spreading false rumours of an impending asteroid impact have provided not one single piece of evidence to support their theory.

first of all let me tell you that I agree with everything you wrote and I appreciate your approach.
Nonetheless, I agree even more with DJM when it comes to the point of science forgetting the most important thing about itself:
you can never prove anything beyond doubt. A theory is accepted and held true until proven wrong.
I’m not a science graduate but this is the first lesson I learned about science.
When you say “the nature of science… is entirely evidence-based”, you are not being entirely correct and you know you are not. The nature of science is to advance theories and support them with experiments, and submit them to the scientific community so that they can be “challenged” and proven wrong by conflicting evidence. In the absence of contradictory evidence, a theory widely accepted by the scientific community is held as valid until proven otherwise. You KNOW this to be true.
My point? (and it’s my only point of disagreement with you):
As a scientist, you are correct in writing “Science does not show that any large asteroid or comet is moving on an orbit that will collide with Earth.”
What you CANNOT write is: An asteroid of that size is definitely not going to collide with Earth in September.
Subtle difference but not so subtle in science.
Furthermore, as a scientist, not only you can’t say it but you don’t *need* to say it. The whole point of the success of science over superstition is in the predictability factor: after the time of supposed impact has passed, your point will be proven automatically if there is no impact. The person who predicted it will be proven wrong (and in scientific theory one wrong prediction is enough to discredit the theory and often its proposer, unless he/she can come up with a logical explanation of where he/she went wrong). If there WAS to be an impact, however, that still would not prove you wrong if you only stated “an impact is highly improbable”, and more importantly, the person who predicted it would STILL not be proven right: in science, it takes far more than one correct prediction to make a theory accepted (albeit only until disproved by evidence).
In this instance, the theory being: “a cosmic event can reliably be predicted by one particular person (?) (or several?) receiving an insight (whose nature would have to be further debated) while sleeping”.
As a scientist, this is a valid proposition (a valid question), just like any other (can elephants fly?). Whether it’s a valid theory or not will depend, also but not only (I’m grossly simplifying) on:
– whether this prediction will come true;
– if yes, whether this occurrence can be reproduced times and times again and prove always correct.

My point was a more generic one: how is science to decide which ones are supernatural prophesies, if not by going through the rigorous process which I grossly simplified above? (In other words, let this guy prove himself right once before you even trouble yourself to ask him how he could predict it and how that predictability can be reliably repeated again and again.)
As somebody mentioned previously, the history of science is full of examples of people being ridiculed by the scientific community for advancing outlandish theories, which will eventually be proven right several years later.
Again, this is definitely not the case in both mine and your opinion (and presumably almost everybody else), but this is not the point. The point is, science HAS to be open-minded. They said Titanic was “unsinkable” because it was so great. It’s clearly a hyperbole to express its massiveness–“it’s big enough to rip through any iceberg that gets in its way” is what they were going for.
As for Noah, wasn’t he supposedly gathering animals and family for a flood that would wipe out the entire earth? While there is possible evidence that it happened, (I’ve seen commercials about the documentary on the History channel,)why did asia and europe and the Americas not get wiped? Furthermore, I highly doubt anyone would know years in advance throught prophecy that a collision was happening. Why? Because when it comes to you in a dream, it’s your subconscious signaling a major event that has or will happen to you in your life, (and dreams are metaphorical). If it comes to you while your eyes are glazed over and zoned out, same deal. Your brain is messing with you. It someone were a true prophet it would come quickly after them giving the warning. A holocaust survivor, (there were quite a few in the video so unfortunately I cannot recall his name,) said that while riding the train to the camp of their deaths, an old woman began shrieking and screaming and crying because she saw nothing but flames and death as they rode. Everyone regarded her as old and crazy, but they soon learned different.
My point: when you start getting warnings you need to act FAST. You don’t get a second chance to save your life, (hence the satire of Dante’s Inferno/Infernus,) and if you’re being sent a divine message, (divination usually presents itself in callings and not a natural gift anyways,) it will come right betore the burn, (no pun intended). If you were born to be a prophet, the spirits would reach you and call you to your work. Someone having “the gift” is complete and utter crap, (in case you didn’t already notice a 70-something year old man with a 13 year old wife building a huge ark and grabbing 2 of each animal “in the world” wasn’t fishy smelling enough).

What about religious beliefs? Some of religious beliefs that I know have mendioned an event really similar to what would happend if there were really an asteroid heading our way on collision course. Asteroid impact, huge waves, massive earthquakes, are stated in some religions.
For most people who believe, it will happen, sooner or later. What if that time is now while we are still here?
We have the science, indeed. But what if GOD decides it will happen? Can we tell when will He decide to drop a meteor on earth huge enough to cause what have been stated in many theories? What power or knowledge do we have to at least predict what GOD will decide?

What id like to know is…have the gravitational pulls of the earth and the moon been figured into this equation? Furthermore have the trajectories of nearby comets..asteroids..meteors space junk or other objects that could possibly collide with this mass been accounted for when this mass passes near us…do we have any kind of an accurate projection of this? I’m not sure which equation you are thinking of, but I will assume that you mean the calculation of an asteroid or comet’s orbit. Yes, the Earth and Moon’s gravitational pulls are included when necessary. That is not often though and usually only factored in if the object is in an orbit that will bring it close to Earth.
Yes, the orbits of many comets and asteroids are well-known and collisions could be predicted in advance. But collisions between asteroids are fantastically rare because space is so big; we have only seen one happen (P/2010 A2). The chances of two asteroids colliding and sending one on a collision course with Earth is fantastically unlikely, it’s like worrying about a tree in a forest 100 miles away falling over and knocking over another tree starting it to roll towards your house.
Sure ALL THESE CALCULATIONS our science is so smart we calculate the speed of a bullet, the angle of the bullet, the DNA on the trigger. Dudes, most of the imaginary applied science shown in Hollywood (even if the science does exist) is not used for MOST of the deaths or bullets shot into people. So what makes you think they are any better with their claims of asteroids.
MY faith in God does finally tell me and make me realize yes, science will get shown the day and hour, because it isn’t knowing the date, it is knowing what to do to survive it. People do not believe in continental submersion. Martial law and staying home is what Pharaoh tells everyone to do.

I am thirty years old and I like to consider myself an educated person that does research and respects the laws of science. However, in the year of 2012 my anxiety was at an all time high when every single website and television show spoke about an impeding doom coming December. I am not sure if it was from my fear of the possibility of such an event occurring or if it just stemmed from my fear of death. Rest assured, after the date past my anxiety disappered and has been gone up until just a few months back when I began to read about a potential asteroid hitting earth this September. Upon doing extensive research on the manner, viewing both sides, my anxiety has dimmed but unfortunately is not going to be completely gone until October
While doing research on the manner I also began to learn about asteroids and there potential threat to us. If you do not mind I would like to ask you a few questions and hopefully you can help make this anxiety disappear. Time is not important so please reply at your convenience. 1. This year NASA held a hypothetical asteroid simulation and gathered with astronomers and scientist through out the world. Is this a first of its kind or something that has been done before? Also, this year is the first time we have a world asteroid day. With these two items and all the media on the internet it just seems like funny timing considering its just months before the claimed event.
2. In July asteroid 2015HM10 passed within one lunar distance of us, extremely close in my opinion. On NASA’s website it had a condition code of a 7 at first but later was lowered to a 3. There are some asteroids in September that have a condition code of a 6 and 7, and both are big enough to cause global devastation. The asteroids that I am referring to are 2012 TT5 and 2015 NK13. With the asteroids being so large and considering they are lately them a close approach is it possible that these asteroids will change there course and risk hitting earth? From my understanding the higher the condition code the more uncertainty NASA is about where it is going?
3. I know a lot of people think that if something massive were to happen, and the government was aware of it, that they will not say anything to avoid mass hysteria. However, wouldn’t an asteroid like this be visible by now to thousands of observatories, amateur astronomers, and scientists? Majority of which I will assume are not employed by the government. Wouldn’t it be found by now and made public? Also, are asteroids found by amateur astronomers and observatories on a consistent basis or is NASA the department doing the majority of findings? I apologize for my ignorance in the manner.
4. The french minister earlier this year stated on television that we have “500 days to avoid climate chaos.” From the date that this was said it looks like the 500th day would land the week of the claimed asteroid attack. Was that comment ever cleared up? Do you know what he meant by that? If you have not heard of this you can simply google 500 days to avoid climate chaos and it pops up everywhere. People are saying that he was warning us but I am not sure?
5. NASA said that as far as they know there are no known threats to earth in the next several hundred years. How accurate is that?

1. Scientists have examined many hypothetical studies of fictional asteroid impacts on the Earth at least as far back as the late 1960s (see Project Icarus at this link for example). These are purely “what if” exercises to see where more research is needed and not actually planning for a real event. I get the impression that this sort of study get more publicity these days. The Asteroid Day conference and events were just that, see their website, they were completely open events with no element of secretive planning.
2.Orbital condition codes are an indication of how well an object’s orbit is known (low numbers are good, 0 means the orbit is completely known). The asteroids you mention are not a concern, look at the JPL Small-Body Database Browser pages for them. In September 2015 2012 TT5 will come to about 0.055 au (1au=93 million miles or 150 million km) of Earth, so it is going to miss Earth by 5 million miles! Similarly 2015 NK13 will miss Earth by 0.099 (1.5 million km)! There is no effect known to science that could cause these object to suddenly veer into a collision course.
3. You are quite correct in saying that an object like this would be spotted by amateur astronomers. Hundreds of asteroids and comets are discovered by amateurs and there are guides on how to do it (for example at this link). Obviously professional astronomers around the world discover asteroids too, for example numerous asteroids have been discovered by astronomers based at Armagh Observatory (our sister organisation). NASA does not control astronomy around the world (or even in the USA for that matter).
4. The French minister in 2014 was talking (at more than one event) about the lead up to a UN conference on climate change that his country is hosting in November this year (link) not asteroid impacts. I do not understand how anyone can ignore every other word in his speeches and then claim honestly that he was warning of such an impact.
5. The assessment of low impact risk over the next century or so is at the moment completely accurate.

No, we don’t have an IR telescope.
If you mean the reported unexplained perturbations to the orbits of the outer planets, since the 1990s most astronomers have discounted them as being real, they seem to disappear when the data is re-examined using more modern measurements of planetary positions and masses.
While it’s interesting, I don’t see what this has to do with this phoney prediction of disaster.
The more I read on these things the more anxious I get, although I would be pretty sure that a Object this size would be visible to most astronomers wouldn’t it? A ‘Cover up’ doesn’t make much sense in that fact. Predictions like this come around every single year..

I believe some people enjoy having the ability to frighten other people as doing this seems to give them a feeling of power and authority. Stranger to me are the people who want to be frightened, there are definitely people who grow angry if I tell them that there is not going to be a catastrophe.
In this case the preacher who made the prediction is not stating a specific date (the September 2015 date is promoted by his followers and conspiracy theorists). This will allow him to continue claiming this disaster will happen as long as it suits his purposes to do so.

Sometimes I really get depressed by the constant excretion of religious rubbish designed to invoke fear in people. The earth is not 6000 years old, and we are not all descended from 2 humans put into a garden by an all powerful creator.
No asteroid is coming to kill us (yet). If one of sufficient size to do global damage was on the way, we (the worldwide astronomical community) would see it.
The point of Rosetta (and other similar missions) is not to covertly steer asteroids or comets away, but to discover more about our true origin. Knowing what these asteroids and comets are made of would of course help in developing deflection technologies, but that is simply a bonus. To understand our place in the Cosmos is the goal.

An article I read stated that Rodriguez was a “SELF PROCLAIMED” prophet. That right there should tell you that this probably isn’t true… Rodriguez’s other prophecies have not occurred when he said they would, so we can conclude that he is a false prophet and need not to be trusted. All I can say is that you are not alone, there will be people around you who you could talk to about your concerns and help show there is nothing to worry about. Also I am not worried about the end of the world because I have studied space and astronomy for a long time. Maybe looking into to it would help you see how there is nothing to worry about. Perhaps you could join your local astronomy club and talk to the members or even take a course in astronomy at a college? Learning about astronomy could help prove to you that the sky is full of amazing things and not things to be anxious about!

Is it true that a meteor hit Iran last week causing damage?
Dear Adrian, it looks like a bright meteor was observed on 30 July but I see nothing believable to say it caused damage. The only report of this that seems in any way reliable is at this link (note the image is of the Canadian meteor of September 2009, not the Iranian one). That story says “pieces of rock have hit areas” , but I’m sceptical of that. Very few meteors reach the ground as meteorites. Every time a meteor is reported on our local media, people call us saying they have found pieces of it. In nearly ten years I can say that sadly not one has turned out to be a real meteorite!
There is an Iranian TV report on this at this link but if you do not understand Farsi it may not help much. They show greyish rocks but these do not look like meteorites to me.
I read a meteor was seen around Asia but caused no apparent damage.
I believe if a large meteor was approaching earth. We would not be told about it.
Example: latest earthquake in chile- no warning expect after a stunami warning.
Am sure the experts knew it was going to happen.

Hey guys we really have to thank the Admin here for taking so much time to answer everyones questions. My brother in law is a seasoned astronomer in New Jersey. He says that an object that size would be easily visible to not thousands but tens of thousands of amateur astronomers around the world. The media could be controlled into hiding the story but only in one or a few countries. The world is very large and eventually other countries media outlets would have started reporting on this almost a year ago. Nothing is coming, everything is fine.
My younger brother was very scared when he came to me with this and we read the articles together. The admin is right, once he discussed it and we both saw that these are ‘radical’ claims made by religious prophets then we both got a good laugh. Christmas will come and you will be sipping wine by the fire place thinking to yourself… oh my lord… how much time did I waste to anxiety and fear.
If it’s not true, please explain this….. The asteroid/comet CAN BE FOUND AT NASA. It is a 6 on the torino scale. Six means Threatening, “A close encounter by a large object posing a serious but still uncertain threat of a global catastrophe. Dear Farawaysis, thank you for your comment which I must respond to. 2012 TT5 is not rated at 6 on the Torino scale. If you look at the JPL Small-Body Database Browser pages for 2012 TT5 you will see that in September 2015 2012 TT5 will come to about 0.055 au (1au=93 million miles or 150 million km) of Earth, so it is going to miss Earth by 5 million miles!

Why would covering up as asteroid impact help anyone? It actually sounds completely counterproductive. Back in 1940, the UK government knew the Germans were going to launch bombing raids on UK cities, but there was no concealing of this alarming fact, instead people were warned what to do, how to shelter etc. That seems a much more sensible approach.

However in 2011 people were telling me that bunkers were being prepared and martial law was going to be implemented because Comet Elenin was going to cause destruction on Earth. This of course never happened. In 2013 people were telling bunkers and mass graves were being prepared and there was going to be a military takeover in the US because Comet ISON was going to cause destruction on Earth. I’m sorry, but to astronomers this does not make any sense. The Earth is moving around the Sun so objects can’t “hide” behind the Sun, an object could be obscured by the Sun by for a short time but not for months at a stretch.
This is outside my field of knowledge, but this Jade Helm affair seems a really minor event, my understanding is that less than 2000 troops are involved. Compare this to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts which involved at least 10 000 National Guard troops, more than a dozen naval vessels and scores of aircraft.

You’re right that there is a lot of human made debris in orbit and bits are falling back into the atmosphere all the time. However most of these fragments are the size of a bottletop or smaller. They pose no risk to human life on Earth.

May I recommend a couple of books which inform rather than mislead you. Reading these will teach you not only what we know about the Solar System but also how we know it. Then you will see how the idea of wandering planets causing disasters to human is so foolish.

Asteroid 2002mn was never seen coming, until it flew right by us….. I’m sorry but predictions could be wrong but also can science…. The sun was blocking the telescope from seeing it… I’d like to know what measures have been taken since then to detect these asteroids?
Dear Rico, asteroid 2002MN was only a few tens of metres across (definitely less than a hundred metres wide). Objects this size are hard to detect because of their size (they reflect less sunlight). An object like 2002MN would cause a major disaster if it fell on a populated area but it would not be the global catastrophe of this phoney prediction. This demands an asteroid several kilometres across, one this size would have been detected by now.
Note too that 2002MN was 120 thousand km away at its closest!

Dear Quest, the Perseid Meteor shower happens every single year at this time, it is nothing new, secret or unexpected! We have covered it many times on this site. You can see me talking about the Perseids in 2010 at this link (note the meteorite in the video is nothing to do with the Perseid Shower, the TV people asked me to bring it along). There is also a good video explaining why this happens at the BBC (link). The Perseids’ parent body, Comet Swift-Tuttle was last in the Inner Solar System in 1992, it’s not going to return until 2126.
By the way, the tiny particles of rock making up the meteor shower are moving much faster than a bullet but burn up about 100km (62 miles above the Earth). Comets are not fragments of asteroids (but some asteroids may be the remains of dead comets).

I heard about this early in the year and tried to forget it as quickly as possible. But now with the supposed date(s) quickly approaching I’ve been more than a little anxious. Losing sleep, no appetite, etc. This did a lot to calm my nerves temporarily, so I’d like to thank you for that. But recently I read a statement, supposedly the director of NASA saying something along the lines of, “when there is an impact there will be no warning.” I don’t have a source to cite on that, I didn’t look too far for one because that kind of stuff scares me too much. I was wondering, real or not, is there any validity to that kind of statement? I scarcely believe anyone who says they’ve received the “word of God” but there are a lot of suspicious events surrounding these dates. All I’d like to do is have a relaxing vacation in September and a pleasant October following. Thanks again.
Dear P, I searched for a video using the expression “when there is an impact there will be no warning.Á I found one with a short clip of David Morrison (link) using those words. I would note that this is an old interview, possibly twenty years old, as Morrison looks much younger in it than he does now. This would fit as twenty years ago Morrison was lobbying for projects to survey the sky for potentially hazardous near Earth asteroids. Now several such searches are going on and there is no chance of a major impact out of the blue. Yes, I agree that these doomsday people never stop. For example, just nearly a week a ago a woman named Linda Kirby received a message from someone who’s dad worked at Homeland Security confirming it, and, it was obvious she was religious. She said it was coming from behind the sun and impossible to detect. Somehow in my gut feeling, they haven’t covered up their lie very well, because in reality, there is no asteroid and the only way to make it believable is them saying that you can’t see it, ”its impossible to detect”. Its an obvious hoax indeed.

Those 500 days end on September 23-24, 2015.
The Minister’s choice of language and the use of the word “CHAOS” indicates to me that they know something big is coming. What that is I have no idea.

Whilst I get your point about the seemingly contradictory nature of my previous comment, I also feel inclined to point out that it is entirely plausible that the French foreign minister could, with US Secretary of State alongside, be used to slowly leak an ÁalertÁ to the general populous about a future calamity – without causing mass hysteria.
POTUS or Pope Francis making an announcement of this magnitude – especially in front of the world press – would likely be considered ÁalarmistÁ and represent immediate cause for concern.
Using government officials that are still important in the eyes of the administration, yet don’t necessarily represent public authority figures of the highest level or importance to the public at large, could be considered a clever play by those with knowledge of this theorised ÁeventÁ (whatever it may involve, or that may arise from it) to roll this information to the public, gradually, and under the radar.
In this instance I can see where you might interpret what I said as contradictory. Yet, my point was this. The French minister unceremoniously declaring ÁWe have 500 days to avoid Climate ChaosÁ before it enters an Áabyss,Á and those government officials sharing more in-depth detail of the relating potential event(s) ahead that may have warranted announcement of that nature with the public – are two entirely different things.

#2 By making it later in the month as well gives you thinking time on what’s going to happen in the next few weeks. Please do not worry, there are asteroids and comets moving around through space all the time. Space is enormous and the chances of an asteroid or comet hitting Earth is very low. No comets or asteroids are currently known to be on orbits which will ever cause them to collide with Earth.
An object like this would be spotted by amateur astronomers. Hundreds of asteroids and comets are discovered by amateurs with their personal telescope. Obviously professional astronomers around the world discover asteroids too, for example numerous asteroids have been discovered by astronomers based at Armagh Observatory (our sister organisation). Governments do not control astronomy and could not cover up discoveries of this importance.
I am a trained scientist (a physicist) and an amateur astronomer (I am not paid to research the sky but I do so in my spare time, I also show members of the public what is in the sky as part of my job) so I am aware of what is in the sky. I cannot observe something that does not exist (like this asteroid).
Eclipses of the Moon cannot harm anyone. “Blood moon” is a foolish name made in the past few years. We hope to have an article about this shortly.
We cannot hear sounds from objects in space.

Dear Brian, I assume you are referring to 99942 Apophis which will miss Earth by more than 31 thousand km (not “just 509mls”) on 13 April 2029. It will not cause “a trail of devastation”. Why do you say it will?
Literally laughing out loud at some of these comments, the ignorance is truly astounding.. on a side note, i believe i witnessed a meteorite come pretty close to hitting the earth a few years ago. Looked remarkably similar to a blueish green roman candle ball and it burned out a good 50 ft. above the ground. Always wondered if it could have been a meteorite.
Dear W, thank you for your comments. From your description I am sure that you saw a bright meteor (a fireball or bolide), however looks can be deceiving, it was certainly 80-100 km overhead when you saw it!

Dear Peter, to astronomers the idea of an asteroid (or comet or planet) hiding behind the Sun does not make any sense. The Earth is moving around the Sun so objects ÁhidingÁ behind the Sun would come into our view when the Earth’s position changed, an object could be obscured by the Sun by for a short time but not for months at a stretch.
Would we see it in the sky by now?
It would not be visible to the unaided eye, but as I’ve been saying, astronomers would have seen it by now.
I believe 100% of this article about we have nothing to worry about that this asteroid hitting earth. But I do want to say. I have read most of these comments about the article and I just amazes me how all of you are in debate with eachother about if this asteroid is really going to hit earth or not and that this is more or less judgement day or “doomsday,” here’s a thought; if you love and believe in our father Jesus Christ and except him into your hearts and souls then what are you so worried about???? Thank you for your article! My husband has become obsessed with the whole Jade Heim thing and that reverends youtube videos. Think about the mentioned details carefully and consider it point by point. A comet hit earth, disease spreads , ward chaos, and panic. There will he food shortage after a while people will raid and steal and kill, both to acquire and protect what they need and have. If you walk across a street you can die. You can simply drown while swimming or in a vehicle accident. My point is when it is your time it is your time. No matter what the government does or says or lack of both the former and the latter. Even if they have some sort of a protection program you are not included in. There is simply sometimes nothing you can do. Whether it is in the hands of God or nature we will die , there are selfish people just like there are kind people and all we can do is work for ourselves to love and respect others and wait and see what happens. Humanity is broken and if ever it is fixed it will be a long time.. Unless we all do fie. Then its how it has to be. I apologize if I seem cold or insensitive but this is the truth and I just want everyone to think about it. We all have mistakes and its our responsibility to work on it no matter what your religion culture or choices. Personally I choose Christ I believe, and see signs, but regardless I believe more so than my care for predictions. So I remain to see and die all the same regardless.

Okay, I am a huge worrier and I have read the article and the comments all the way down. I am here in Arizona (USA) and it’s nearly 2:30am my time, but I couldn’t sleep because some sick person on Facebook posted about the asteroid and these prophesies and I got really frightened. Thankfully, there are others like you out there who referred me to this page and finally I am feeling more at ease. I would like to just add something to think about, I have seen a ufo or light in the sky that did some crazy unbelievable things, I was not alone that day. many people saw it too. This was a good article. And while some of the comments make me a bit worried about people who wrote them, the admin has been enviably patient and polite answering.
Somehow I feel like most of the world end believers are from the US. Many people there don’t seem to trust their government, nor to have much idea about the outside world. (Like the whole idea about Nasa being able to cover up everything.) It also always baffles me how so many people seem to be afraid of whatever conspiracy, rogue planet or nonexistent meteorite, but at the same time not seeming to register or accept the existence of REAL threats like climate change or the importance of research – so that we might for example find potentially hazardous (real) meteorites. I know NASA is tracking quite a few objects, we are projecting the paths of these objects on their current locations and speed over time. So far accurate, but what happens if one these objects for some reason has their path altered, which NASA will see and then recalculate for the correction. I was just trying to leave the door open for variables unseen. Your article is very good, like 2012 people can be moved by what they read and hear. I think sticking with the math, reality and facts that can change from day to day should make people relax. I would encourage everyone to get off the 2012 train (which by the way did not happen) and do some more research on their own, using accredited sources of information. Well done my friends.

Dear Justin, the answer to your hypothetical question is threefold. An impact like the one made up by Rodriguez would have consequences around the world, it would be the most severe cataclysm experienced by the Earth since the impact at the end of the Cretaceous Period (although quite so bad). According this this site (link) Connecticut is 2675 km from Puerto Rico. If we imagine an asteroid hitting just off the coast of Puerto Rico, the tsunami in the ocean caused by it would travel at 970 km/h, so the waves in the ocean would reach Connecticut 2 hours 40min after the impact, the shock waves in the atmosphere travel at about 1190 km/h so would be felt in Connecticut about 2hours 18 mins after the impact. Fastest of all are the earth tremors, moving at 6km/s, they would shake Connecticut less that 7.5 minutes after the impact. I imagine the flash would be visible on impact.
Remember this isn’t going to happen!
Hi, i hope nobody will judge me for what i am about to say but i’m a 22 year old male who suffers from chronic anxiety & a general anxiety disorder and ever since i heard about this whole “asteroid collision with earth” conspiracy i have been terrified, i had my anxiety & panic attacks under control for a while but this story has made all of those horrible feelings come back, i’m not saying i believe the conspiracy but in my head i keep thinking “what if it is going to happen?” how can you be so sure that the rumours are false and that nothing is going to happen?
Dear Ross, I am sorry that this hoax has distressed you. If you read the article you will see that:
a) The original source is a preacher who claimed to see this happening in a vision. What he says is going to happen makes no sense on many levels.
b) The original fake prediction is being passed around the internet in YouTube videos etc by people who do not care about the truth. They’re only doing it for the money or to promote a religious or political agenda.
c) No asteroid of this size has been seen on a course that will collide with Earth.

in the prediction of Mr Rodriguez or any other religious
soothsayer that does not back impact predictions with
hard verifiable facts, backed by instruments, measurements

to see earth and astronomical sciences beginning to piece
together the complex interaction of earth, the Solar System
and deep space.
Given the relative newness of impact study I was particularly
intrigued by the dramatic events surrounding the 21 comet
fragment collisions that occurred on Jupiter in the 1990’s
As discovered by Ms Shoemaker and David Levy.
This event was an eye opener that seems to have soured
significant interest regarding impact ramifications not only
in the scientific community but politically and in the Dept. of
defense.
These are really interesting times considering the number
of spacefaring satellites that are currently deployed to
investigate asteroids and comets.
Which leads me to my main point that kind of ties into your
Rebuttal of the lunatic(s) making these end of mankind claims.
My personal research suggests the most serious threat
to earth from an impactor would be from a comet that
shakes loose from the “Orrt” cloud. It is my understanding
these comets, once they start falling inward to the sun, are
among the most difficult objects to detect and literally impossible
to predict.

The Sun is moving through the Galaxy at a speed which is small compared to the size of the Galaxy so it is unsurprising that we see the same stars in the sky over human lifetimes. The Moon keeps the same face to Earth as its rotation around the Earth is synchronised with its orbital period due to tidal braking. Every moon in the Solar System is synchronised to its parent planet in the same way. This has been understood for centuries and is in no way evidence for the supernatural.

From a logical perspective you can’t rule it out entirely, since we have not discovered all possible asteroids. This is why the astronomer’s union begged Congress to appropriate funds for full-sky scanning. Of course, Congress, which doesn’t even fathom global warming, is too busy funding wars and baloney – so they got turned down.

Dear Florien, it’s sort of true. Yes, telescopes cannot be pointed at or near the Sun for obvious reasons. However any asteroids and the Earth are moving and it is impossible for an object to be hidden by the Sun’s glare for any length of time.
If people are so obsessed with the end of the world, they can go and do something real about it rather than spreading fake stories. Do farming, plant organic food, use less petrol, make less garbage, recycle, stand against Gmo’s, maybe then an asteroid would be the thing that would literally matter.

At the moment I have a deep interest in space. And what I would like to know is, if an asteroid was on imminent collision with earth, is there any way possible to warn people months in advanced. I ask this question because these videos on YouTube and other media platforms across the Internet seem so ridiculous that, if any celestial body was on a direct path towards earth, surely the information would get out much quicker – included with scientific proof.

Dear Patrick, you are correct that the condition code is a measure of how accurately the object’s orbit is known. Some internet sources are (possibly deliberately) confusing asteroid 2012 TT5’s condition code of 6 with level 6 on the Torino Impact Hazard scale (link) and sadly this is frightening people.

Dear admin, I posted my fears a few days ago about how upset I was about all this talk about the meteor hitting in September. I suffer very badly with anxiety and the news of this meteor has mad me very ill. This morning I remember that a few weeks ago that my daughter did a project at school about space and she mentioned the Space Gaurd Centre so I had a look on the Internet and found it was located in Knighton, Powys about 30 from where I live so we rang them and headed over to talk to Jonathan R. Tate the director of the space guard centre, I needed someone to tell me face to face with facts that we were safe. He told us it was utter rubbish and there was no meteor heading our way what so ever. Something like this would be impossible to cover up because of amateur astronomers all around the world are constantly on the look out,and just like the SpaceGaurd centre are not controlled my governments or in receipt of government funding. So I feel a little happier now this is just a hoax and now I understand a little more about NEO’s and also the plans of how we could stop a future NEO from hitting earth. So all I can say is do some research and talk to someone like Jonathan R. Tate.

As for it hitting who knows and for answering to god we need to think about how he/she should be answering to humanity for the suffering we have caused ourselves and the amount of innocent children lives over centuries of wars and killings over his/her name that he/she could prove a point to his/her angels. You could have a play with these, I believe Rodriguez’ followers claim the imaginary asteroid will be 2.5 miles (4000 m) across, they have no other useful data like its speed or composition but you could experiment with different values. I hope you find this useful.
I do not know if any rock will hit Earth at the prophetic time but I am curious if something like a comet could be hidden by the sun or the sun’s glare until reaching an intersection point with Earth. We do remember that the rock that created a sonic boom over Russia was reportedly not noticed because it came at us from the sun’s direction. I have read some time ago that Nostradamus predicted a rock to hit through Cancer which I believe is just about to exit the sun’s morning glare soon.

Im 13 and I am very scared. So if for some divine intervention the asteroid did hit us then would it have any effect in Houston Tx. However it must be something that is usual in the sky, if a large new object was visible to the unaided eye it would be reported throughout the general and scientific media.

I was genuinely surprised by the number of people who believe crazy predictions like these to be true. I was also surprised to read in the comments how many people think that some-one who works for Armagh Planetarium may also be working for NASA and the government (it made me giggle), and shocked at the fanatical religious views expressed. I have terrible anxiety and I can’t stop shaking after finding out about this. There are a lot of articles saying NASA could hide this. I found out from a YouTube video by the person with the name of Renee M. The person said they had inside information about it. Are you positive that amateur astronomers would see it? Is there any way that they could miss it? Normally after an end of the world story like this gets debunked I’m fine but this time is different. People keep saying things like FEMA stockpiling body bags and coffins and Jade Helm being an excersize to be able to control crowds when people find out. This current hoax is a sad case of history repeating itself. In 2011 people were telling me they’d seen videos and websites saying that bunkers were being prepared and martial law was going to be implemented because Comet Elenin was going to cause destruction or three days of darkness on Earth. This never happened. In 2013 people were again telling me bunkers and mass graves were being prepared and there was going to be a military takeover in the US because Comet ISON was going to cause destruction on Earth. This of course never happened either. There was nothing to be scared of in 2011 or 2013 and there is nothing to be scared of 2015.

Dear Elaine, a very quick piece of research shows this to be nonsense. A religious group is claiming this for theological not science-based reasons. They have previously predicted world-ending disasters on 21 May 2011 and 21 October 2011, obviously these have not happen. No one should take these predictions seriously!

this disaster is going to happen or not. The most important message should be…Do you know Christ as your saviour? Believe that you will always be in the saddow of the Almighty…whatever happens. If you are not a believer in Christ…Hey what does it matter?
To ease everyone’s mind on this. I have a list of failed predictions and some points at the end.This is just a small list as there are many.
April 1987 – Leyland Jensen predicted that Halley’s Comet would be pulled into Earth’s orbit on April 29, 1987, causing widespread destruction.
July 1999 – A prediction attributed to Nostradamus stating the “King of Terror” would come from the sky in “1999 and seven months” led to fears of the end.
January 2000 – Y2K
May 2000 – Star Holocaust would pull all planets to the sun thus burning them all up.
2003 to present day – Planet X or Nibiru will collide with earth.To this day followers still say it is almost here.Still this one is a very thoughout false predicition that is interesting if you like science fiction.
1969 – 2012 – Rapture
2011 – Fears that Comet Elenin would cause the earth’s crust to tear causing global earthquakes and mass exctintion
2012 – Mayan Calendar
August 2013 – Rasputin prophesied a storm where fire would destroy most life on land and Jesus Christ would come back to Earth to comfort those in distress.
September 2015 – And we come to this one.This one will come to pass as another false prediction. As stated above if there was a giant asteroid about to hit earth many amateur astronomers would have found this and this would be all that is talked about from within the conspiracy theory and other websites alike. If those of you believe the government has control of the information and it wouldn’t get out then sit back and think at just how many people there are in the world. one bit of info gets out and it starts a trickle down effect. so basically i’m saying we would have known by now.
I also want to talk about all the youtubers who post all this September doomsday stuff as fact. They do this all for video hits and that is it. They cleverly pick through movies,articles,commercials,tv shows etc. and state the information they find as facts and piece it together to make it seem that way. you can look back at the 2012 Mayan Calendar and the same thing was done. I know many people who were scared that year. Many people I knew and people i would see. Luckily i’m a person who loves to be in the know on everything related to this stuff. I calmed a lot of people that year.
All in all this prediction will be false like all the others. sorry that this got so long administrator.

Think of it this way, nobody knows when the next big one will hit us because nobody has seen it yet. Sometimes they come so fast we don’t even know it. and if it did hit and it was huge like they say, you won’t even know it hit ya. Secondly we are more likely to go by a pulsar or a red dwarf. So yeah I wouldn’t even worry about it. Live your life!

If you don’t mind I would like to comment on the pulsar and red dwarf and you are welcome for my earlier reply.
A Pulsar is basically what is left over after a Star goes supernova. So basically if that happened near us we wouldn’t be here to see the pulsar since the Supernova would evaporate us basically.
On another scenario if a Pulsar was to somehow come into our solar system and get near us it would be basically the Carrington Event all over again multiplied by 10,000(probably more than that.) Also the tides would get all crazy and we’d see tsunamis,crazy weather we have never seen.Sun would go bonkers and start belting out solar flares we have never seen before. Our atmosphere would be weakened and the radiation from space and pulsar would hit us. Oh and eventually the pulsars gravity would pull us into it and we would cease to exist along with everything else on the planet. So I guess what I’m saying is it would be bad lol
Our closets red dwarf(Proxima Centauri) to us is 4.24 light years away from us so we don’t have to worry about that. If one was to come close I would believe that the sun would keep it at bay,but it would more than likely pass through the Oort Cloud which could hurdle comets and other icy objects towards us. I did look into to that and scientists predict that it could happen eventually(Death Star HIP 560),but it would be 240,000 to 400,000 years from now. and it’s 200 light years away so my take is it probably isn’t gonna happen.
Dear Stylez, thanks for responding, I think maybe it was the terminology used that was responsible for my confusion. I agree that a nearby supernova would probably be fatal to us all. Thankfully there are no likely supernova candidates nearby or neutron stars in our vicinity.

2012 TT5 was last observed in 2012. The condition code is listed as a six, not to be mistaken with its rating on the Torino scale. If a condition of a six seems like a certainly high level of uncertainty why hasn’t the asteroid been observed again for the last several years? Do asteroids disappear and are hard to find again? Also, there seems to have been a fireball in Thailand the other day. Is this a normal event?

It is a small faint object best observed when it is close to Earth. I’m sure it will be observed on its forthcoming approach.
This does occasionally happen. There is a fairly useful entry on Lost Minor Planets at Wikipedia.
Meteors are burning up over our heads every time of day, usually we only notice them against the dark sky of night. However daytime fireballs are more common than most people realise (I’ve seen one). What is great now is that the ubiquity of cameras mean lots of people record these spectacular events now.

As a military person, I can say this, no the govt does not publicize horrible news to prevent mass hysteria. However if there was a large comet coming in 2weeks truse me we would already see it in the sky. Religious fanatics frequently use these ploys to gain notoriety or for financial gain. There’s nothing more to it. If, by chance something of this nature does occur, there’s nothing that can be done about it that would not cause equal or more destruction, so love, live and prosper. Just my opinion.

Dear Elaine, the article that has frightened you is from a trashy tabloid newspaper and is lurid and sensationalised BUT nowhere in it does it claim that this really going to happen! It is (mostly correctly) reporting that a minority of religious enthusiasts are claiming this disaster will happen to promote their own ends and that people who actually know about asteroids regard this as childish nonsense. That is exactly what my article says too.

Hello, I am so sorry that this silly story has worried you so much. I can only reassure you that there is no gigantic asteroid going to hit Earth this month or anytime soon. I hope you can read my article again and see that I say that a preacher said this will happen only because he says he was shown a vision. To me this sounds like he made this story up. No astronomer in the world agrees with him. To learn the fascinating truth about asteroids, you should read more magazines and websites about astronomy or visit an astronomy club. Dear Adrian, no there is no chance of this. If you look at the close approach data for this asteroid this September (link) you will see that there is a range of approach distances cited (Nominal Distance, Minimum Distance and Maximum Distance). The minimum and maximum distances are at either end of the range of uncertainty from the calculated orbit. At absolute worst it will miss by 0.05497 au (8.22 million km)!

Happening or not, to all the folks posting that your scared, is that really how you want to go out… panicking and afraid? one would think something like this would make you realise that life is short and we need to make the most of it we can, there is literally no time for fear. If you’re going to die in 10 days or 10 years, face facts you’re going to die eventually so get out there and love with all your heart, feel with all your being, live with all your life. In other news from this little county called South Africa, where we have this place called the Sutherland Observatory just sort of known for having this thing called SALT, the biggest ground based telescope in the southern hemisphere (4th biggest on the planet to my knowledge) and is capable of viewing over 70% of the planet’s sky. Now the reason I’m mentioning it is because the father of one of my best friends works there and considering he is a twitchy, overly paranoid, little man (I kid you not, he made 4 of my buddies and myself spend 6 months digging a bomb shelter for the Y2K fiasco… which need I mention built up this huge hype for absolutely nothing, so anticlimactic I literally flipped the switch at the DV board for a day or two just for some satisfaction) but here is the thing, if he of all the people I know in scientific fields of work, hasn’t attempted to load us into his shelter yet it’s a pretty safe bet we’ll all wake up comfy and warm in our beds at the end of the month. On top of that I believe there are only really 3 reasons for not being able to monitor asteroids or comets from there, namely they are to small to track effectively, their orbital path comes between earth and the sun in which case what soon to be blind moron would attempt it? Or finally it’s orbital path travels through the shadow of a planet though I might be wrong there, admin feel free to correct me I may have a 162IQ but I’m a game developer not an astronomer. As for the religious side of this whole thing, I believe it was Emperor Constantine himself that is quoted as saying “We will use Christianity as a manner of controlling the greater masses”, the story of Jesus alone is near blatantly plagiarised from the Persian god Mithra, never mind the other 15 examples from other religions all predating the “invention” of Christianity. I’m not bible bashing or anything, I’m just saying Christianity has a lot of explaining to do for not only the worlds youngest religion but also the worlds most blood soaked religion especially considering it preaches: Peace, Love and Harmony…

Eh em, this doesn’t all correctly match up. First of all, this “September 23 Asteroid Impact” scientifically, is impossible. Along with that, it should only be associated with religion, and not science, and religious-wise, it still won’t happen. Both science and the bible disprove that the “end is imminent.” The practice of the belief that the end is always imminent is NOT in the Bible. There are certain things/stages or seals that should occur before the “second coming.” And again, this should only be associated with religion due to the fact this was first started by a religious person, Efrain Rodriguez. No one is in their place to state that there is scientific reasons that there is “indisputable evidence” of a celestial body. No, there isn’t. The sixth seal hasn’t opened, which means this cannot happen. And for the sixth seal to open, there needs to be several others opening, which hasn’t opened. And by the way, by biblical logic, a “prophet” will return and tell us that the second coming is here, but that wont happen. If it did, [which it won’t] it should happen on the 15th, or the 16th [It should be seven days before the supposed impact.] As that is what the bible states, 7 day pre-warning. So, the end of the world is not imminent. By biblical logic, you shouldn’t have to worry about it. Now, the next topic. The problem is that this is a “snowballed” topic, which means it will have one conspiracy theory put on the day, then another, then another, until there are about several conspiracy theories. And it’s put on this certain day because it is two days from the papal visit to Philadelphia and the pope is visiting Obama, which is a coincidence. Back to the theories, it has religious theories and pseudoscientific ones. Like, how does a random scientist get that this asteroid is affecting our weather off of a reverend. How come 2015 HV 182 does not have a minimum distance or pass by date or size in meters like all other asteroids listed on JPL website. I can’t seem to find any of this info on this specific asteroid yet all the other asteroids have close approach data. I would like to note that the condition code for this is a 9
Dear Adrian, I don’t know the answer to this. However 2015 HV 182 will not make a close approach to Earth until October 2033 (see this link) so there is no question of this object hitting Earth in September 2015. Perhaps the JPL Small-Body Database Browser does not calculate so far ahead.

Though I am a Christian believer and believe that the time of the end is upon us, I also know from Revelation that there WILL be a meteoritic impact……Wormwood, but that wont happen till the Tribulation hour.
Jesus Christ warned us about setting dates, people. He doesn’t want us to be apathetic, He teaches us to be aware of the signs to come, but as for a meteor impact, I can definitely say NO…and as for anything ELSE that the conspiracy theorists (admittedly I am one of them but I don’t necessarily go along with the crowd) the best any true Christian believer can say is an educated MAYBE.

Hi. Stuff like this can and will happen sometime in the future. Don’t worry about it. If and when it does, you will not be able to run from it. Just make peace with God and be ready for when that time does come. God tells us that he will destroy the earth with fire and brimstone. Is it this year? No one knows and no one is going to know. I don’t believe there is an asteroid coming on that date, not only because your article and your thoughts state this but we believers need to understand we do not know the day or the hour of God’s coming and events that will take place.

After reading the first dozen or so comments here I was happily chuckling to myself. Having now reached the bottom of the page, all I can feel is profound sadness.
How can so many people be so ill-informed or so easily misled that they would believe this nonsense? How can it be that 12- and 13-year-old children with genuine anxieties are having to seek reassurances from a stranger with a blog about something that their parents should be decrying as a matter of course?
I commend the author for attempting to offer what is evidently a much-needed dose of sanity, and for showing such patience when dealing with the more obnoxious posters.

Enjoyed your article. We have the most fun watching all the wacky theories on youtube about comets, meteors, earthquakes, aliens, Jade Helm, et cetera. It is worrisome that so many people buy into it all. Unfortunately, there will always be enough people to fall prey to this sort of thing due to their religious beliefs or fears. I am not downplaying their faith. I am a Christian who believes that we have been given the ability by God to learn through science. Last night I saw… Philippine time, around 10.45 pm to 11pm …the largest shooting star I’ve ever seen in my life… it entered Phil air space. It was sooooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful….. a little smaller than the size of the moon…. that’s how close it was… i thought it was just a lightning or a plane on fire diving or a fire cracker but it was not bec fire crackers fell straight down…. this one had a long streak going from right to left direction…. it was sooooooooooooo bright yellow green white and blue and looooooooooong streaks…. sorry i am just an ordinary human ….. i feel so blessed to have witnessed it…..
The entire sky lit up…. it was a beautiful… there’s an airplane approaching the same direction i hope the pilot saw it too…..

Writing from the US I have no concerns of this occurring. I do find a lot of comments extremely amusing. One answer to every question would have to be wether or not you believe won’t matter. If it happens ( which I don’t believe it will) you wouldn’t have paid attention and will vanish in moments anyway. If it doesn’t happen( which it won’t) the one’s standing outside at 2am will feel pretty crazy that they fell for the doomsday joke again. This is absolutely terrifying! I’m sat here and I don’t know what to do or say. My head feels like it is spinning. I really see no way out of this. My remaining days will be filled with frustration and confusion. My Husband and I have noticed the last few days that there is a very bright star in the sky early morning which we assumed was the North Star. However it looks a lot brighter than it normally does and seems to be a strange shape so could this be an asteroid? But as someone already said, if it was to happen the government would not tell us as it would cause mass hysteria. Plus with these planes keep going over as soon as its a clear sky and we get chemtrails, it makes us wonder what they are doing it for, are they hiding something? I know a lot of these stories are rubbish but it will happen one day and no doubt there will be people like you dismissing it and saying its not true so not to cause panic.
Oh and for all those who claims God lets people and babies die..is also utter rubbish. Dying is all part of life and we all go when our time is up. However a lot of illness that people get such as cancer are caused by manmade means, such as pollution that we are breating in, or our lifestyle i,e smoking, drinking too much, taking drugs, eating fatty food which causes heart attacks etc. Again babies who are born with deformaties or other illnesses are caused again by what we eat and pollution so again is manmade. God gave us a choice and we chose to destroy this beautiful planet with the rubbish we put into the atmosphere and we choose to destroy our bodies with the rubbish we put into them. Sto stop blaming God for everything that happens.

No comet passed. Earth was not in danger from any comet (or asteroid) this month.
Lunar eclipses are not called blood moons, this is a name invented in the past few years by people who want to encourage superstitious fear.

I came to this site (Google showed me ^_^) to find some new facts about the dinosaur killer asteroid (I do believe it). I didn’t find what I’m looking for, but at least I found a good site about astronomy.
