To all users of the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m telescope and
other interested parties:

We have set up a mail server and archiver for discussion of various
aspects of the 3.5m telescope, patterned after the mail server for the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Mail sent to one of the mail exploders below
will be disseminated to all subscribers, and will be archived on a
secure WWW site, accessible with xmosaic or Netscape. We hope that
this will facilitate communication about the telescope between members
at different institutions, and will also serve as an archive of useful
information about the telescope. To subscribe (or unsubscribe) to any
of the servers below, please send mail to Michael Strauss
(strauss@astro.princeton.edu). To send a message to one of the
servers, send mail to (server-name)@astro.princeton.edu. It is useful
in these messages to always include a subject (as this will appear in
the index of messages on the WWW archive), include the date at the top
of the message, and sign your name on the bottom (last name too; we
get many messages on the SDSS server signed by "Jim" or "Don", leaving
us all guessing).

The mail is archived at the following URL:
http://www.astro.princeton.edu:81/mailinglists.html, accesible from the
Princeton Astrophysics homepage. At the moment, access is
allowed from computers in the astronomy departments
at Princeton, University of Chicago (including Yerkes), Fermilab,
University of New Mexico, University of Washington, Washington State,
and Apache Point itself. If you are unable to access this and you
think you should be able to, or if you think more locations should be
added to this list, please send mail to Michael Strauss.

The mailing lists we have include:
apo35-general
General discussions about the 3.5m; including items that will have
widespread interest to people in the 3.5m community.

apo35-telescope
Discussions about various mechanical aspects of the telescope
itself, and related structures (dome, control room, etc.)

apo35-dis
Discussions about the Double Imaging Spectrograph.

apo35-grim
Discussions about the GRism Infrared IMager.

apo35-dsc
Discussions about the Drift Scan Camera.

apo35-hri
Discussions about the High Resolution Imager.

apo35-echelle
  Discussions about the Echelle.

apo35-guider
  Discussions about the offset guider.

apo35-chaos
Discussions about Adaptive Optics at APO.

apo35-computers
Discussion about various computer-related issues at APO, both
hardware and software. This would include discussion of the remote
observer interface.

More mailers can be added if the need arises; just let Michael
Strauss know.
There is nothing wrong with posting a message to more than one of
these mailers. Although we will need to guard against frivolous
messages flooding people's e-mail, we clearly need to increase the
degree of communication between users of the 3.5m telescope, and our
experience with SDSS has shown us that this is one effective way of
doing so.

			Cheers, Michael
