Introduction
Statement of Project Purpose
The Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) consists of astronomers at the following institutions: University of Washington, University of Chicago, New Mexico State University, Princeton University, and Washington State University. The goal of the consortium is to provide for its members a world class groundbased optical telescope by 1987. In addition some advancement in the art and engineering of large telescopes will be pursued.
Scope of This Document
The telescope design itself is one of three major project tasks. Its interface to the other two tasks is illustrated schematically in Figure 1.1. This report deals with the telescope system task indicated by the unshaded outlines in the figure, i.e. the telescope and its enclosure. Task boundaries have been carefully defined to minimize the complexity of communications between tasks. This "interface" description is the subject of a separate document currently in preparation.
The level of design detail presented here is variable but is intended to provide a sufficient engineering base on which to estimate costs, scheduling, and feasibility.
