Spindle heating/cooling curves

The temperature of the spindle housing is plotted v. time. The spindle was running at 3500 RPM and was turned on at t = 0. The spindle housing was initially at room temperature. An exponential equation was fit to the data. The time constant is 3.5 +/- 1.2 hours and the equilibrium temperature is 26 +/- 6 °C above ambient. The outlier at 2 hours (that appears in the following graph also) is likely due to uncertainty in the time of the sample.
The displacement of the front surface of the spindle housing relative to the table is plotted v. time. The spindle was running at 3500 RPM and was turned on at t = 0. The spindle housing was initially at room temperature. An exponential equation was fit to the data. The time constant is 5.6 +/- 1.9 hours.

The temperature of the spindle housing is plotted v. time. The spindle was turned off at t=0. An exponential equation was fit to the data. The time constant is 6.0 +/- 0.6 hours and the equilibrium temperature was assumed to be 20°C, i.e., room temperature.

The displacement of the front surface of the spindle housing relative to the table is plotted v. time. The spindle was turned off at t=0. An exponential equation was fit to the data. The time constant is 5.3 +/- 0.5 hours and the equilibrium displacement was assumed to be 0 µm, i.e., the displacement at the beginning of the experiment.
