Which is the latest version of Remark?
The latest version of Remark is listed near the top of the "message of the day", which is displayed right after you connect to the MC from Remark.

 

Which version am I running?
To determine which version you are running, pull down the apple menu and select About Remark (do this while running Remark). An information window will pop up. The version you are running is listed there.

 

How do I download and install the latest version of Remark?
On your Macintosh, find and launch the application called Fetch. A window called Open Connection... will appear (if it doesn't, pull down the file menu and select Open Connection ). Fill in the information in this window as follows:
  • Host: galileo.apo.nmsu.edu
  • User ID: anonymous
  • Password: leave blank
  • Directory: pub/src


After you have done this, click the OK button. This will connect you to galileo.apo.nmsu.edu. Scroll down the list of files to those named Remark###.sea.bin (the entire file name may not show in the window). Find and click once on the one with the largest version number. Select automatic and click on Get File. After the transfer is complete, close the connection and quit Fetch. On your Macintosh, double click on the file you've just downloaded (It should be called Remark###.sea, where ### is the version number). This will create a ready to use Remark application.

 


Remark and the DIS

How do I get the DIS slit mask menu to show the current list of available slit masks?
To update the menu list of available slit masks, click the sync button in your configuration window.

 

Is it OK to slew the telescope while the DIS is moving its gratings, slit mask wheel, or filter wheel?
Yes, in terms of command interference there is no problem. The computer that runs the telescope is separate from the one that runs the DIS. However, if you are doing high precision spectroscopy you may want to move the DIS components after the telescope slew is complete, to avoid possible small effects on the grating positioning. (Opinions vary as to whether telescope motion affects this.)

 

Is it OK to slew the telescope while the chips are reading out?
No, although in theory it should be OK. In practice we have found that slewing the telescope while the chips are reading out produces short tails on the bright star images (as if the shutter was still open).

 

Is it OK to move the DIS gratings, slit mask wheel, or filter wheel while the chips are reading out?
No, the DIS cannot take commands while it is reading out the chips. Sending a "move" command while the chips are reading out will result in a command collision. Your "move" command will be ignored and you will have to re-enable your Move button. Also, some of the status information you receive from the DIS will be lost.

 

My expose button appears to be inactive (is greyed). How do I reenable it?
To reenable the expose button, close and reopen the Camera - dis window.
I clicked the expose button and received the "Expose command sent" message but nothing else is happening. The exposure is not progressing. In this situation, how do I get my expose request to work?
First, close and reopen the Camera - dis window. After that, hold down the "apple" key and type T, or pull down the File menu and select Develop Stuff -> Test Buttons . This will open the Tester Window. Click on the ?1? button. This will open a command window. In the Command: box type stop inst. Click OK. Go back to the Camera - dis window and click the expose button again.

 

My Move button is disabled (greyed). How do I reenable it?
Click the sync button. After the sync is complete reselect your grating, filter, and slit mask settings from the pull-down menus in the Dis - Configuration window, then click the Move button again.

In the Dis - Configuration window there is a pull-down menu labeled Settings. What does this do?
The Settings option allows you to save a particular DIS filter, slit mask, grating, and wavelength configuration as an item in the Settings menu. To save your current configuration, click the Add button next to the Settings menu. A window will pop open, asking you to give your configuration a name (for the menu). After you've saved your configuration you can recall it by selecting it from the pull down menu. Note: You still have to click the Move button after you've recalled your configuration from the Settings menu.

 


Remark and FTP

I'm not able to FTP Login. What should I do to get my FTP Login to work?
 
  • You must be connected to the MC before you can login to your Remark FTP session.
  • Your password must not contain a semi-colon or a double quotation mark.

 

I've started my FTP login session but none of my images are being transferred. What should I do to correct this?
Open the Exposure window and make sure Send>FTP (each) is selected.
