SUPPORT ASTRONOMER

New Mexico State University is seeking a technical and computer-oriented person as a Support Astronomer for nighttime astronomical observing at Apache Point Observatory (APO) with the Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) 3.5m Telescope.

Responsibilities include nightly operation of the 3.5m telescope and instruments, and quality monitoring of the data streams, system performance and observing efficiency.б  Position includes working with consortium faculty and students including training, developing software products and procedures for improving operations, and performing service observing.б  Work entails a non-standard work schedule, including occasional weekends and holiday hours as needed. Nightly operations consist of setup, instrument preparation and calibration, telescope operations, service observing, and operations with remote astronomers via the Internet.

Minimum requirements are a Master’s Degree in astronomy or related field with five (5) years of professional experience related to the standard duties as outlined. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and seven (7) years of hands-on observing experience with modern astronomical spectrographic and/or imaging instruments, moderate to large telescopes, and astronomical data reductions with demonstrated successes in astronomical rese is equivalent. Relevant experience includes hands-on telescope operation (with attendant mechanical and computer expertise); proficiency in Unix/Linux, TCL, IDL, C, Python and IRAF; imaging and spectroscopic data reduction; and CCD instrumentation and electronics.б  Unix programming skills are desirable.

TELESCOPE OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

New Mexico State University (NMSU) is seeking a technical and computer-oriented individual for a position as a Telescope Operations Specialist. The position involves nighttime astronomical observation at Apache Point Observatory (APO) utilizing the 3.5m Telescope owned by Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC), and operated by NMSU. APO is located in Sunspot, New Mexico (www.apo.nmsu.edu).
