Moving Spectrograph #1 and #2: March 25, 1999

Spectrograph #1 and #2 are reunited in the SDSS work space (#1 in forground). The plan is to move #1 to the telescope and conduct a preliminary fitting.

The CCD cameras are positioned on the lab bench for future installation.

The Egyptians have nothing on us. Our slaves for the day are (l-r) Jon Brinkmann/APO, French Leger/FNL, Slim Baxter/APO, Jon Davis/APO, and Steve Bastian/FNL, who are preparing the lifting straps on #1.

The method of transportation was to muscle #1 using strapping and bars to hoist it onto #2's crate bottom (which still has it's wheels).

So with a mighty heave, the boys get momentum and slide #1 off the lab bench and onto the crate.

The "Queen's barge" is slowly transported down to the telescope. The guys wanted to make it a smooth trip due to the concrete seams on the walkway.

Steve Bastian prepares the spectrograph cart to move the instrument to the rotator.

How to get it across the pier grating? Take some aluminum angle iron, lay it across the grating, and align the wheels of the cart!

Congratulations, Spectrograph #1 is moved to the telescope and is fitted to the rotator.
