SDSS Camera Mounting

SDSS Camera Mount to Enclosure

The early evening (10/23) brought an excellant suggestion from Ernst to take a break, gather our collective thoughts, and have dinner. PU folks hosted the site staff to a wonderful spaghetti dinner (cooked by Ernst, Zlako, and Angie).

Plus, kudos to the previous visitor who left the "Milky Way" spread (swirled chocolate and creamed hazelnut from Austria) at APO. The folks had quite an enjoyable time finding different food groups to apply it to and eat!

Now comes the nervous stuff.... French, Mike, Jim, Larry, and Jeff take up positions under the telescope to start the work of fitting the camera to the telescope.

Larry, Jim, and Mike make adjustments to align the corrector and instrument latches with the camera.

As the camera is lifted, everyone closely monitors the progress. Angie operates the instrument lift controls off camera.

The camera fits to the telescope

(note Jim's smile)

Larry Bartosek/Fermi activates the latches and the control panel indicates (in a rather poor picture) 3-red lights showing the latches are engaged.

This is the last (for the time being) of these minute-by-minute images. Today (10/24) the PU group is working with Fermi adjusting latches and controls, and tweaking the doghouse. At some point, the camera will be moved into the Ops Bldg. for a long period of workup.

35mm pictures have been extensively taken of all these activities. You are welcome to use these online pictures in whatever manner you need. Additional pictures are being taken of ongoing activities and will be placed on line at a later date.

Final pictures can be accessed on APO's home page, 2.5m Telescope: Camera Move to Clean Room. These pictures will remain on this site until 10/31/97 and then stored. Pictures taken by Gretchen Van Doren/Apache Point Observatory.
