Upon assignment to APO, the new employee will receive a safety briefing within two working days of arrival. This briefing will include a review of the Safety Program. Hazardous areas and operations will be discussed. If the employee is involved in any hazardous activities as part of his/her job, then in-depth training will be provided in those areas. Operation of the fire alarm and protection system will be discussed. Proper use of fire extinguishers will also be given at this time.
When visitors make their housing reservations, they are directed to the Site Safety Plan via the web page.
All permanent employees will receive a safety briefing annually or when significant changes to the facility or to procedures occurs. These briefings will cover in-depth procedures relating to various hazards as outlined in the accompanying sections. Subjects to be covered include changes to: the facility, identified hazards, reporting procedures, operational procedures, and the Site Safety Program. Use of fire extinguishers and MSDS books will also be reviewed. An open forum will be presented for employees to discuss new safety ideas or concerns.
As their job warrants, employees will be given specific and in-depth training on particular activities that involve physical and/or health hazards. The training will consist of information from respective sections and other sources.
Training shall be provided by qualified on site permanent personnel whenever possible. Qualifications will be based on previous training and experience. If persons of proper qualifications are not available, arrangements for outside instructors can be made. It is anticipated the Site Operations Manager or Site Safety Officer will be able to provide all the necessary instruction. For a permanent record, the instructor will provide the Site Operations Manager with a list of attendees and a brief synopsis of the subjects covered.
Specialized training is also available through the NMSU safety office. When applicable to their job, the employee will be provided this training.
The Site Operations Manager will schedule training. The briefings will take place at APO during normal daytime working hours. Employees unable to attend will receive a separate briefing at a convenient time.
