30.1 INTRODUCTION
This section covers the use of LASERs at APO regardless of Class or function. This includes alignment LASERS to the APOLLO Lunar ranging program. This plan does not cover aircraft or satellite issues. Those are covered in a separate project plan.
30.2 APPLICABLE STANDARDS
LASER use shall be in accordance with the following standards:
ANSI Z136.1 American National Standard for Safe Use of LASERS
ANSI Z136.5 American National Standard for Safe Use of LASERS in Educational Institutions.
OSHA PUB 8-1.7 Guidelines for LASER Safety and Hazard Assessment
NFPA 115 Recommended Practice on LASER Fire Protection.
30.3 RESPONSIBILITIES
The Site Safety Officer shall determine applicable protective measures based on the applicable standards and the LASER Class.
Where required the program Principle Investigator (PI) shall prepare a safety plan and provide for training of persons exposed to the LASER. Prior to first lasing, the safety plan will be signed off by the APO Site Safety Officer and the APO Site Operations Manager.
Where necessary, APO shall provide for the cost of the initial medical examinations.
Where necessary, protective clothing shall be furnished by the PI or APO.
30.4 CONTROL and OPERATION
Laser control and operation shall be in accordance with the applicable requirements of the standards for the specific LASER class.
