Abstract

The Rayleigh approximation is extended to the case of light scattering
by multi-layered non-confocal coaxial ellipsoidal particles.
All the ellipsoids forming such a particle have the same centre
and directions of the main axes.
The particles are assumed to be in a constant electric field, and a system
of Laplace equations with corresponding boundary conditions is considered.
Since the elliptical boundary surfaces are not confocal,
the layers are divided in a number of sublayers and for each of them
the expressions for potentials are written in own ellipsoidal system.
At the boundaries of the sublayers approximate boundary conditions
(equality of potentials and their normal derivatives) are utilized.
The polarizability of a multi-layered particle is calculated as a product
of matrices (with the size 2x2) and each matrix depends only on
the parameters of one layer.
