Use on openSUSE
===============

All of the recent development for XmCCD and XmTel has been on openSUSE
systems. No recent version of Suse Linux includes Motif or fxload by default, so
you will have to install them. Use openMotif if possible, and build it from
source for the Motif libraries. For fxload, use the rpm from the appropriate
openSUSE version (fxload has to be patched differently for each version).

Unfortunately, the kernel packages available by default in version 10.2 do not
include the usbfs filesystem. You could use 10.2 and create the needed kernel
components, but for new installations version 10.3 appears to be a better
solution. It will work "out of the box" once fxload and Motif are installed.

Older versions may not work at all because of the changes that have occured in
system management of USB devices and in libraries. We have encountered a
variety of problems in compatability between 10.0 and 10.1 and the different
SBIG library versions. The best combination appears to be to use Suse 10.3 with
the latest XmCCD.

We have several SBIG cameras and have at various times tried USB versions of an
ST7, ST9, ST10, ST2000, STL1001, and STL6303. We have used these with the CFW8,
CFW10, and CFWL (STL built-in) filterwheels, and with the AO accessories. We
have not, however, been able to test with other cameras, although other users of
the Linux drivers have. There may be some aspects of the XmCCD software that
would require tuning for particular cameras, but it should be straightforward to
accomodate those issues as they arise.
