Writing to your legislators is an important component of lobbying. The following tips will ensure that your written words get heard:

Make sure your letter gets to the right person. In some cases, it may be necessary to contact the chairpersons of the committees considering the legislation and the House and Senate majority leaders. Send concise, timely, factual and unemotional letters that are written in your own words. Keep your letters to less than two pages in length. If necessary and appropriate, you can attach a fact sheet. Write letters to the editors of local newspapers and magazines in order to get the attention of legislators and inform members of the public. Time is of the essence! Contact pertinent legislators when the legislation is before them for consideration.
